Q: 80gb of HD space disappeared after partitioning

So today i Followed the apple Bootcamp Assistant Help page to install a windows partition on my mac. Windows did not install, and when i attempted to restart using the alt key, there was only a mac hard drive. when i went into about my mac, i found this, which did not work

I then went into boot camp, and clicked restore partition, which then gave a pop up that said partition could not be restored, and so i returned to about this mac, to find this

that was the only disk partition, this is 80 gb less than what it should have been. I have tried restarting in various ways, still nothing, I've trawled the web, and cannot find anything, so if anyone would be able to help, it would be much appreciated

I am using a 15' mac book pro, 2015, 2.2ghz, 16gb ram, 250 gb storage

Please post the output of the following OSX Terminal commands.

diskutil list
diskutil cs list

The simplest solution is to use Time Machine, back up OS X, boot into Internet Recovery, erase your internal disk, and restore from the TM backup. There is also a Terminal method, which can be used, but it is a bit labor-intensive and depends on how comfortable you are in OS X Terminal.

Okay, Thank you, please could you outline the terminal method, as at this point in time, i will not have access to a time machine device

1. Disable FileVault2 - Use FileVault to encrypt the startup disk on your Mac - Apple Support .
2. Run diskutil cs list in Terminal. If you still have a CS volume or get any output,
     a. Boot into Internet Recovery - OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support
     b. Click on Utilities -> Terminal in Recovery Console and
          diskutil cs revert 5A3B847F-9AEF-4B4F-84E5-F21E6E0AEAB4 (this came from your diskutil cs list output).
     c. Check that diskutil cs list does not show any output.
3. Merge Recovery HD into OSX. The order of disks is critical, otherwise you will lose OSX Data.
     diskutil mergePartitions jhfs+ "Macintosh HD" disk0s2 disk0s3

4. Run Utilities -> Disk Utility and extend your Macintosh HD to it's full by dragging the bottom right corner (prior to El Capitan) or allocate the full disk to Macintosh HD.
5. Re-install and upgrade OSX, because you just overwrote Recovery HD (in step 3).
6. Reboot and test.

If you see any errors, please post back error messages and step number.

so having tried this typing in diskutil cs revert 5A3B847F-9AEF-4B4F-84E5-F21E6E0AEAB4 I got the output: unable to find disk for 5A3B847F-9AEF-4B4F-84E5-F21E6E0AEAB.

Please could you advise as to the reason for this?

i did, by going into setting, file vault, turn off file vault, enter password, then it restarted, and decrypted all my data

It may not be complete yet, because it shows encryption type. One quick check would be to look in Application -> Utilities -> Console logs. You may also want to check that the long string in the revert command matches the "Macintosh HD" LV string, in case I mistyped something.

just to make sure, i cross checked with the screen shot, this is appearing to be very inconvenient, would it be possible to use time machine to back up to an HD?
