Q: App Store BTS update?

Today at about 5:00pm EST all Mac users in my Call of Duty 4 clan could no longer open their App Store copy of CoD4. However, all of us have several apps that were purchased via the App Store that won't open and some that will. Console shows the following for CoD4 attempting to launch.

com.apple.xpc.launchd[1] (com.aspyr.callofduty4_mp.88672[570]): Service exited with abnormal code: 3

So at first I assumed a possible BTS update to Gatekeeper. However, I have Gatekeeper disabled. And just in case I did a codesign verification on CoD4. And just to go 1 step further I even forced my own fully functional Mac developer code signature onto the app. However, none of that worked.

Anyone have any ideas as to why certain Mac App Store apps all of the sudden stopped working across several continents all at the same time?

Have the same issue here but with Newsfire. Restarting, running Disk Utility, trashing app, re-installing from App Store (after logging out, then back in) - nothing works.  App still unusable, won't launch.  Apple Support didn't have a clue when I emailed them.

Same issue with COD4, guess we will just have to wait for a fix from Apple!

And why is Apple not even mentioning it? We have to read about it on theguardian.com instead of hearing from the company who's

    a) responsible for causing the problem, and

    b) morally obligated to fix it.

Meanwhile we're messing around with command lines and rebooting our Macs like idiots. Nice job, Cupertino.

Exactly! Apple haven't even mentioned this problem. More likely they are hoping it will just go away and no one will notice!

I've also contacted apple support...pretty sure they'll have no clue what to do!

Apple updated the security certificate already (yesterday). You have to...

    1. Reboot

    2. Drag app binary to trash (uninstalling via uninstaller or X removes support files)

    3. Redownload from App Store

No dice Paul. Fetch and a lot of other apps simply don't work now... Apple, are you listening? I have already requested a refund from Apple and will no longer purchase anything from the app store. Will be going directly to the source from now on to purchase software. I find it quite insane that an oversight by Apple can render purchased software unusable for over 24 hours. I have work to do!

Nice condescending wrong answer, Avery. Tried it already. Doesn't work.

It was not condescending at all. I simply posted what has worked for thousands of people and was published by dozens of reputable blogs.

Maybe it worked for a game Paul. But this is WAY bigger than a game. Virtually the entire app store has been rendered worthless for many people who purchased software to do you know, work.

I'm not talking about just a game either. I have way more than just 1 app affected. However, if you download anything from the App Store as of last night, each MAS receipt has the updated certificate. You can see that by printing the certificates of said app's receipt. So I'm not so sure Apple is as ready to admit wrong...although I want them too.

openssl pkcs7 -inform der -in /Applications/NameOfApp.app/Contents/_MASReceipt/receipt -print_certs -text

I'm in this as much as you guys. Hence why I started the thread. But rather than creating personal attacks against people trying to give solutions, why don't we all put our heads together. That's what forums are meant for.

It is still not working for me!!

Have tried multiple variations of removing and re-downlaoding, logged out of App store, logged into App Store, restarted etc - all to no avail!

Try to launch the app and it's lucky if it bounces once then nothing!!!

    I still get the:

    13/11/15 5:19:30.496 PM com.apple.xpc.launchd[1]: (com.aspyr.callofduty4.152992[1935]) Service exited with abnormal code: 173

    error in Console!

Just finished redownloading it from the App store again, and nothing has changed.

Paul, can you explain how to see if the certificate is updated on each app?

By entering the line I posted earlier into Terminal. For CoD4 specifically it would be...

    openssl pkcs7 -inform der -in /Applications/Call\ of\ Duty\ 4.app/Contents/_MASReceipt/receipt -print_certs -text

Near the bottom you will find

Okay, I just tried that and here's what I get on those two particular lines:

There's a whole bunch of code stuff after that, but isn't it a bit strange to have these 2 dates?

    Validity

                Not Before: Sep 24 19:09:31 2015 GMT

                Not After : Oct 23 19:09:31 2017 GMT

further down (sorry, it's making me write in this black area) it also has these dates:

    Validity

                Not Before: Feb 14 18:56:35 2008 GMT

                Not After : Feb 14 18:56:35 2016 GMT

and the ones you posted above, further down:

                Not After : Feb  9 21:40:36 2035 GMT
