Q: missing songs after iCloud music library

I tried Apple Music for three months and then turned it off. Now music that I own (on CD, purchased from iTunes) is listed as only being in the cloud and unplayable. And I keep getting prompts to login to my iCloud music library. I've shut off Apple Music on all my devices. What do I need to do to fix this?

Thanks!

    Hey Jeff Greene,

My understanding is that you have let your Apple Music subscription expire after the three month free trial and now looking at your music in iTunes it appears that the music is all in iCloud. You want to have the music on your computer, and presumably on your other devices as well. Is that correct?

What has actually happened here is that you have the iCloud Music Library turned on, so your computer is looking for your music online. To change this, do the following -

    1. In iTunes go to the iTunes menu and select Preferences.
    2. Go to the General tab.
    3. Deselect iCloud Music Library.
    4. Close the Preferences window.

This article talks about how to turn iCloud Music Library on, turning it off follows the same way - Check your Apple Music library settings.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

    Happy computing.

Thanks Brett - you've diagnosed the problem correctly, but your solution isn't working for me. In the newest version of iTunes, in preferences/general, there is no iCloud Music Library box to deselect. I see "show apple music" which I have unchecked, but that's it. Do you know what I should do instead?

    Greetings Jeff,

If what you say is the case - that is there is no iCloud Music Library checkbox to deselect - then you will need to either restore from a backup made of your iTunes Music Library made before turning on Apple Music, or redownload (in the case of iTunes purchases) and re-rip (from CDs) the songs.

This article talks about restoring from a Time Machine backup - Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac.

This one tell how you can redownload previous purchases from iTunes - Download your past purchases.

Probably unneeded since you have done it before, but this explains how to rip CDs into iTunes - Import songs from CDs in iTunes

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

    Be well.

Thanks - I know how to do those things but it strikes me as almost impossible that my iTunes/Preferences/General tab doesn't have an option (iCloud Music Library checkbox) that everyone else has. Is that even possible?

I had to deauthorize all of my computers, and sign out of my iTunes account on each one, but now all the songs are back and accessible. Still no checkbox, but whatever.
