Q: MacBook Air will not boot however fan runs high

On switching my MacBook Air (Mid 2012) on, nothing appears to happen, and there is no sound, however after several minutes the fan starts to run loudly before eventually after several more minutes the fan stops and nothing further happens.

The MacBook is fully charged and plugged into the outlet.

This happened once a few days ago but when I tried turning it on again, it worked, and has done so since, until today when no matter what I try, it will not turn on.

I have tried following instructions here: https://support.apple.com/en-in/HT201177 to reset the SMC but this has not helped.

Could this be related to the issue described here? http://www.apple.com/uk/support/macbookair-flashdrive/

I am currently travelling abroad and am not able to visit an Apple Store. Is there anything else I can try?

Thanks for your help and suggestions in advance!

    Hi bonnington,

Thanks for the details on the symptoms of your MacBook Air and what you have tried. That the fans come on for a few minutes shows it is getting power even if the screen remains dark and there is no startup chime.

The MacBook Air Flash Storage Drive article says:

To see if your drive may be affected, go to the Mac App Store, click on Updates and choose the MacBook Air Flash Storage Firmware Update 1.1. The firmware update will test your drive to see if it is affected. You will be directed back to this page for next steps if needed.

It doesn't sound like we are getting that far.

The article you referenced, HT201177 is linked from another article

If your Mac won't turn on - Apple Support

Plese go through that article for more things to test like:

    3. Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to your computer. This includes things like printers, USB hubs, or mobile devices.

    4. Hold down the power button for ten seconds. Then, press the power button again to see if the computer turns on.

    5. Reset the SMC.

    6. If you recently installed memory or a drive in your Mac, make sure it's compatible, supported, and installed correctly. If possible, reinstall the original memory or drive to see if the issue persists.

I know you've done step 5. but we want to rule out other things.

    Take care.
