Q: ichat in not working with gmail account

I used ichat several years ago and am now wanting to get back onto it to perhaps message my husband that has an iPhone, but it's not allowing me access - giving me a server name or password incorrect error message.  I have reviewed several other discussions on this and have tried most everything.  I do not have a mac.com, mobile.me, or iCloud account, but never used one before when using my ichat…it is simply set up as a gmail email address.  I have gone into preferences and changed the server to talk.google.com with port 443.  I have gone into my Keychain Access and the password listed is the correct one for my gmail account. It also has limited access, but ichat is listed as an allowable app. I've tried to logon to AIM, which takes me to an AOL sign in, but again, I cannot gain access to it using my gmail account (old or new password).  Since google now has "hangouts" instead of gchat or talk, is there somewhere else I need to go make this work?  Or is ichat an app that is no longer used?

    Hi,

Google have decided that SSL as a login method is not secure enough for them.

However on your Google account settings they have a "Allow Less Secure Apps" option you can enable.

Also on the Web Mail page there is a separate set of Settings where Chat can be turned On and Off.

I am not sure now how I did it ,as I only did it once, but I was offered the chance to "return to Talk" from Hangouts.

AS you appear to have read the Account in Messages should have the Server Settings listing "talk.google.com" as the server

The port is normally 5223 with the SSL setting but 443 (and SSL) also works. (although mine is currently using 5223).

On some of the other info you have posted.

If you are posting here you have an Apple ID.

If this is yours and not a shared one with your husband then you can use it in Messages as the iMessages account (it does not have to be @mac.com or @me.com or @icloud.com - they are just Apple Issued IDs rather than using another email as your Apple ID).

If this Apple ID is also your Google ID it can be entered in Messages in two places - As the Apple ID for iMessages and adding it as the Google ID as you are trying to do at the moment.
