It sounds like the memory card you install are not the correct ones for your iMac.
I suggest you return them.
Then go to http://www.crucial.com/ and download the scanner available there. It will scan your Mac and send the results back to Crucial. Crucial will then send you a report with all of the alternatives that are available for your iMac as far as memory goes.

In addition the Apple RAM spec's also say that you can only use 2GB or 4GB modules.
