Q: Finder tags disappear while typing them in (in Preview).

If I open a PDF in preview, rename it, and then start adding tags, I have to add a tag 2-4 times for it to stay; otherwise, it dissappears.

For example: I start typing a tag. A tag autopoulates below my typing. I hit enter to accept the autpopulated tag; the full tag enters the textbox. As I begin to type a second tag, the first tag dissappears. This happens 2-3 times in a row.

This has happened many times a day for the last 30 days.

Tried so far...

Repair permissions (in recovery mode)

Reinstall (in recovery mode)

Viking: If I press enter in time, then the tags (usually only one or two) get entered. So, THANK YOU! That's helpful!

However, about 2 out of 5 times, I cannot press enter before the tags disappear (even though I am using your workflow: type, press tab to autocomplete, press enter).

I wonder if this could be fixed by simply changing a certain hard-coded "time-out" setting (i.e., if the existing code makes autocompleted tags disappear if enter isn't pressed within 500ms of autocomplete, then change 500ms to 2500ms). If it's that simple, then I'd be delighted because that would mean my problem would be, for all intents and purposes, solved.

Scratch that. Even when I press enter to add a tag, it disappears. I find, however, that if I wait 5-10 seconds after opening the file or changing the name of the file to add a tag, then the tag stays on the first try. Honestly, it is annoying to have to wait every single time when I am renaming and tagging 100s of PDFs.

Did you find any solution so far? I'm having the same issue with Yosemite.

I already reinstalled and stuff, but it didn't fix the problem. It's really annoying.

I'll let you know if I eventually find a solution.

Edit: I just tinkered around a bit, and I think I found a solution!

I opened the tab "Tags" on the Finder preferences. I renamed one of my tags to something else, and changed the name back to the original again after that. While doing this, the list should rearrange itself (perhaps that fixed it?).

However, since I've done that everything is working fine again. I hope it's a permanent fix and works for you too.

Interesting. This change is also causing improvements for me (because of time constraints, I only tried a couple files after renaming some tags [I just changed capitalization] in Finder preferences). I will mark this as the solution if it ends up panning out on future files. Thanks Sam!

Sadly, I am right back to the same problem. So it seems this solution is only temporary.

Even after I confirm each tag by pressing "enter," the tags dissappear a moment after pressing "enter." I have to wait about 5-10 seconds between renaming a file and entering the tags to avoid this frustrating phenomena.

    Update:

To address this issue and new issues with Preview (correlating with the update to El Capitan: Freezing, mishandling in-text links, and rearranging highlights or text), I did — among other things — another clean install (without restoring anything).

I was able to reproduce the issue immediately.

This would indicate (as far as I know) that it's a bug — a bug that's been around for two years now.

(Feel free to correct me about the bug thing; I'd be thrilled if there is a solution that I haven't thought of).

    Update:

    • I replicate this on computers in the Apple Store.
    • Then the Genius Bar installed a fresh copy of OS X 10.11.2 from their own servers (without restoring anything) and we reproduced the issue.
    • Pretty sure that means it's a bug.

The Genius said they would try to escalate the issue. I will be talking with AppleCare about this and a related issue with my iCloud account (which might also require escalation) soon, so perhaps there is hope that this will be addressed.

Thanks to everyone for your help!
