Q: iPod takes 9 hours to restore?

My iPod has been stuck in the apple logo and then it goes black and the apple logo again and it keeps repeating it. When i try to restore it, it says its going to take 9 hours to download software and then the "connect to iTunes" goes away after about 45 minutes and it goes back to apple logo and the black screen.  Do i actually have to wait 9 hours or am i doing the wrong steps to restoring it? Everything is up to date and once i click restore it starts the 9 hour process. I've already tried updating it from iTunes and its the same thing.

iPod touch, iOS 9.0.2

Your problem seems to be that Recovery mode is timing out before the firmware download is completed.

Follow the instructions in the following to first download the firmware and then place the iPod in Recovery mode and restore via iTunes. Make sure you download the current iOS version for your iPod. For a 5/6G it is 9.1 and make sure you download the firmware for you devices since iPhone firmware will not install on a iPod

Use the Step 5 update using iTunes instructions but download the firmware for your device. Note that if you try to restore to an earlier iOS version you will only get errors

Thank you! everything worked but now it went back to what it originally did when it turned off after immediately unplugging it from the charger. Now what??

Are yo saying the restore successfully computed without errors?

If so that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.
