Q: Silent alarm has begun to ring! ????

Bought a silent ringtone for my iPhone 6 through the iTunes app. Worked great at first; I could set an alarm and the phone would only vibrate, not ring. But then the "silent" ringtone suddenly started to ring audibly ("radar"). Tried changing the selected ringtone to an audible tone, then back to the silent ringtone, but that didn't change anything. Restarted phone regular way, and forced reset way (home and power button simultaneously); that didn't fix it either. Then the iOS 9.1 update came along, and when I installed it my silent ringtone went back to silent. But now it's started audibly ringing again. Very annoying. Any ideas?

iPhone 6, iOS 9.1, null

    Greetings emcee510,

Thanks for using the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that you are experiencing issues with a ringtone that you purchased from iTunes. The ringtone is supposed to be silent, but it has begin making noise. Because this issue seems isolated to that one ringtone, I would suggest reporting the problem to iTunes.

Report a problem with an item purchased from the iTunes Store, App Store, Mac App Store, or iBooks Store - Apple Support

    Have a great day!

Okay, I'll try reporting it to iTunes support, but I don't think that there is anything wrong with the ringtone itself. It worked properly (i.e., silently) right after I bought it and for several months. And then after upgrading to iOS 9.1, it worked properly again for several weeks. Now it doesn't. This seems to me that the problem is with iOS, not with the ringtone itself.

Just had the thought about deleting it from my iPhone and re-downloading it from the cloud, but apparently it's not possible to re-download purchased ringtones!

    Hi emcee510,

If you do believe the issue may be the operating system on the iPhone, one step you may take is to reinstall the operating system. Doing so will install a fresh copy of iOS on your iPhone and should help us isolate the issue between the tone and iOS.

Performing these steps should not affect any data on your iPhone, but it is always best policy to make sure you have a backup before completing this task.

To reinstall iOS on your iPhone, please follow the steps from the If your device turns on but gets stuck during start up section in the following article.

    1. Connect your device to a computer and open iTunes. If you don't have a computer, you can borrow one, or go to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider for help.
    2. While your device is connected, force it to restart. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. Don't release when you see the Apple logo. Keep holding until you see the Recovery mode screen.
    3. When you get the option to restore or update, choose Update. iTunes will try to reinstall iOS without erasing your data.

iTunes will download the software for your device. If it takes more than 15 minutes, your device will exit recovery mode and you'll need to repeat steps 2 and 3 again.

    Best!

This very same problem has happened to my wife's phone (5C up to date iOS). She bought a silent ringtone (a bit like buying fresh air) so that her alarm can go off on vibrate under her pillow without waking me. This has worked fine for several months until two days ago when it started ringing (and vibrating). The Radar ringtone sounds, although this is not selected in the individual alarm setting. The suggestion of re-installing iOS seems ridiculous and there is no indication in this thread that it solves the problem.

Come on Apple this is simple stuff! Give us the option of a silent vibrate-only alarm. Preferably one we don't have to pay for.
