Q: ios 9 update doesn't download

Today I went to the Apple store because my Touch ID stopped working.

There was a problem with the logic board, so I got a new iPhone - 5 days before warranty run out. It's great.

Only: the new phone is on ios 8.4, and in order to restore my backup, I need to update it.

Only: the update doesn't work.

I'm on a very fast 16 mbs internet connection, but after two hours I still looked at "iTunes is downloading software and will install when it's done"

I quite iTunes because 2 hours is excessive. I remembered that when I updated to ios9 on my old phone it took a total of 15 minutes.

Now I started the whole thing again, and again I get that unresponsive screen in iTunes. No progress bar, nothing, just that dead screen that tells me it's downloading. But I don't think it does.

Why can't I see a progress bar - nothing at all. It looks like nothing is happening.

    Hello Ocean 17,

Glad you got a new iPhone. Not sure why it's not updating the iOS though. Do you have a computer you can update with or another network to try it on?

See Resolve issues with an over-the-air iOS update - Apple Support for those and more suggestions.

Let us know how it goes.

There was no problem. It just took many hours to download.

With my old phone, the upgrade only took 10 minutes - because likely iTunes downloaded the software in the background.

    Everything went well.

I'm really glad that Apple is generous and doesn't bug you. You got a problem with your phone - they check if you didn't drop it or spill water on it, and then they fix it. Glad I went, as I had a full schedule and almost couldn't make it.

Now I have a fresh phone without the rub marks at the corners that you get over time from carrying it in the pocket. And the home button is all springy again.

And Touch ID now works super fast. (I think the senors for it degrade over time, and in combination with the logic board problem of my old phone it led to those awful "three wiggles" (try again). For the first time I could call up Apple Maps while driving - it never worked before, because the slight increase of skin moisture that you get when driving already threw off the sensor.
