There is a fair possibility the unit is no longer supported by the newest OS X upgrade...

However if still supported, the unit may have a hardware failure in an internal component.

Although the old unit may not see support from HP, that may be a place to see if similar

issues where resolved in their user forums and if any technical support is available free.

Other kinds of print drivers may be too old for use with the HP in OS X 10.11.x.

Were you able to see if the HP printer could be discovered by use of Bonjour?

Sometimes alternative wireless methods may exist but not support all the original

features a printer or an all-in-one model previously had with earlier drivers & OS.

If you have original drivers for the printer, or a source to attempt a re-install of those that

had previously worked in the former OS X version, you may see if they may be re-installed.

Some of the software you may need to try would be direct from the maker, since none of

the old stuff would be via the software update features in the App Store. At times, drivers

from as old as 10.8.5 may work, however product support from the maker and in a later

OS may vary from fair to non-existent as time and device service life move on.

Sad to say, you may need to look for a replacement printer that suggests El Capitan support.
