Frankly, I don't know how your external drive is configured. It's going to be much easier to transfer a pile of mp3 and mp4 files, but it all depends on what kind of files you have. Once you have the files sorted, use iTunes to sort and sync them.
And congrats on your new machine!

Also, as stated, if the above are a problem or you don't quite understand,
give Apple Support a call, it's free.
If you haven't already, consider purchasing Applecare. This not only extends
hardware coverage but also extends free usage support. Also, if something like a
hard drive dies outside of the normal warranty (which can happen, HDDs are mechanical
devices), repair cost will be much more than the cost of Applecare. Like insurance,
you pay for it and hope you never need it but glad you did if something happens.
