Q: I can't sign into the app store.

Can't sign into the App Store or iTunes just get the spinning cog. I have uninstalled all anti virus software, I am not running Snitch or anything else like it....and I am tearing my hair out. Any help please. I last updated something on the 31st Oct, after the last El Capitan update and I haven't installed anything since.

I've got the same problem on one of my iMacs.

The logic board was changed several years ago and I guess the serial number was not input by the tech. But everything has worked fine for years... until El Cap was installed. Now I can't sign in to the App Store... I enter the password and it just spins. I have to force-quit to get out.

I don't know if it is related to the serial number issue or to the recent certificate issue. I get both messages in the log:

    apsd: Certificate not created

apsd: Hardware serial number is invalid.

Does anyone have any news or updates on this issue?

I'm about ready to go back to Linux

    Thanks.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

    Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

    Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem.

Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

    I tried all the above.

In my case I'm sure it has to do with not having a serial number:

OS X: "Cannot connect" or "Cannot connect to the App Store. An internet connection is required" - Apple Support

I sure don't want to have to drive all the way to an Apple Store to get this fixed. Lots of people have had good luck using this flash the logic board with the serial number:

    http://rogersm.net/2013/06/how-to-set-your-mac-os-serial-number-to-use-icloud

I'm hoping that Apple will come out with a fix for this mess.

Thanks for your suggestions Linc......Step 1.......still can't sign in. Step 2.....still can't sign in.

From the number of people having this problems and other weird things happening surely it can't be a local problem, must be something Apple have done. My friend when opening his apps has had to either sign in or download them again for them to work.....puzzling and frustrating....thanks again.

I've had similar problems on three Macs, and they have been widely reported. I don't think for a moment it can be something wrong with your Mac. It's a mess-up in the App Store with the security certificates, and claims that this has been fixed are obviously unfounded.

First, the known issue with expired certificates in the App Store would not prevent you from signing in, either to the Mac App Store or to the iTunes Store (which is not affected by the issue at all.) I have no trouble signing in to both, and neither do millions of other people.

A system process is indicating that your machine doesn't have a valid serial number. I asked you to check the serial number. It's not clear whether you did that or what you found, if so.

Linc is correct. If you don't have a serial number you cannot connect to the App Store or iTunes. This is a change made in El Cap.

The above was told to me by an Apple Support Tech Advisor yesterday.

He said I must bring in my machine to an Apple Store so that the Genius can 'flash' the serial number (which you can find under the base of an iMac) into the firmware.

Lots of folks have had success with this method:

    http://rogersm.net/2013/06/how-to-set-your-mac-os-serial-number-to-use-icloud

(scroll down to see the 100+ comments up to the present)

Maybe Linc or another highly credible person will look at the above and give his/her opinion on the Blank Board Serializer.

I will try it today and see if it works for me. It will save me a long drive to the Apple Store.

When I go to 'About this Mac' it says the serial number is unavailable.....

Then you've found the cause of the problem. Please do as I suggested in my comment of Nov. 12.

DO NOT download a pirated Apple service tool.

With El Cap you can't get into the Mac App Store if you don't have a valid serial number.

Either take the computer to an Apple store and let them re-enter it or you can find other answer by this search:

Linc says not to use a 'pirated Apple tool.' I understand is position. But if people are 500 miles away from an Apple Store, what solution should they use? Just wait for Apple to fix this? Good luck with that. I hope they do fix it, but my bet is that they won't do it anytime soon. They won't even comment on it. If you can't get into the App Store or iTunes, what is a better solution? Switch to Windows or Linux?

I've got exactly the same problem. Brand new Mac Pro. No unofficial software. Apple account working fine on iPhone and iPad, and even on my PC. The problem is only on the Mac, and only since upgrading to El Cap! It says Software Update 10.1.1 (I think, can't see the screen now for the login box) is waiting, but restart is needed. As soon as I hit restart or update it prompts for my login, and once I've entered my details it just sits there with the wheel spinning.

I've tried all of the above, and had no joy. At the moment all I have is a very expensive piece of metal and plastic sitting in my office that can't be used for anything!

Oh, and I do have a valid serial number too.
