Q: Ipad Pro shuts off while charging and requires a hard reset to turn on

Hello,

I got my iPad Wednesday, spent the evening getting it all setup.  Restored from back up, ensured everything was there, wiped my iPad air 2 (sold it), deleted it's back up and went on with my normal routine.

At night it was down to 40% so I charged it and went to bed.  When I woke up it was "dead".  It wouldn't wake up.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to come to life.  Worked on it for a couple of hours and had to run an errand.  Plugged it back in as I was going to need a full charge later that day.  Came back to it, same thing.  Dead.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to turn on.

Used it more, then last night plugged it in and this morning, same thing.  I am thinking that there is an issue with this iPad.

I am now restoring it, since that it what online support recommended I try.  Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Thanks.

Have the same issue. 128 LTE

Since launch I have had the same issue. So after two mornings of having to do a hard reset to power on the device, I went to the genius bar.

I ended up getting a genius replacement since they could not do a return because they didn't have a new in box replacement.

So I set the replacement up as new, install all my apps again, sign into all apps again, next morning same thing. Hard Reset.

Restored the replacement via iTunes and setup as new, same thing. Hard Reset.

So Now I have to be inconvenienced again and return the Genius replacement, then re-buy a brand new one when they get one in stock.

When all is said and done, Im looking at about 2-3 hours of my time wasted on getting this thing replaced and the new one will still likely have the same issue.

A Genius replacement did not solve the issue.

Setting up the device as new did not solve the issue.

Restoring via iTunes did not solve the issue.

My guess is this needs to be fixed via firmware update.

Do yourself a favor and just wait it out, and feel free to report this to Apple.

    Don't waste you're time like I did.

For a $1,300 product, I can't believe Apple shipped these like this.

Yes, the ubiquity of the problem suggests that Apple almost had to have known about it. Puzzling

Pretty discouraging. I agree...for such an expensive and premium product, an issue like "needing a forced restart after charging" should not be present.

The genius store, not so genius afterall huh?

I'm so disappointed in this product that I want to ash it to smitherines. To add to the disappointment the genius store here(Bangalore, India) sent me a quotation which costs me more than the device itself. I took this up with apple California and a guy from Ireland calls up and says, "There's nothing that could be done".

After seeing all these discussion forums here I'm convinced that Apple Inc was well aware of these issues as some of the threads that I am following dates back to 2011-2012.

The new one works fine. So definitely seems not to hit them all.

HI, I have had the same issue with my 128GB lte iPad pro.  I had the issue from an overnight charge, and from leaving it charging for a 3 hour stint.  I thought it might be due to some software issue or incompatibility but it wasn't as the last 2 times that i tried a full charge was with no apps running.  I thought about it for a while because the first night that I had it I didn't have this issue even though I let it charge all night.  Then I came to the realization that I was using my cable from my new Apple TV 4th generation to charge the iPad Pro The first night.  I tried a sample where I let the iPad pro charge to full and let it sit for 4 hours while it was charging, came back, and it started right back up.  No hard lock up.  Soooo, if you have one of those cables you might try it.  I'm wondering if there's a problem with the new longer lightning cable that is shipping with the iPad pro, or if there's a bad batch of cables being sent out.

FOr for reference I have no cover, no external keyboard, and I have nothing hooked up to my iPad.  I do have wifi on.  I have not activated the lte yet.  Blue tooth is turned on as well.  I have not tried my iPhone 6s cable yet.  Will attempt that tomorrow, but thought I'd share that information about my Apple TV 4th gen cable working.  Also I was under the impression that the Apple TV 4th gen cable was actually a usb to usb-c cable... So not sure if that is the resolution either given the fact that Apple has usb3 capabilities built into the new lightning port or some variation therein.

also for reference I was able to get it to lock up with the shipped iPad pro cable pretty much every time if I let it sit charging for a few hours....  It's consistent in that.  Apps on, apps off, background refresh on, background refresh off...  I've tried a lot of combinations for the sake of seeing if there was a resolution.  So far all I've come up with is the different cable.

Sorry for the typos.  All of this was typed on the iPad pro soft keyboard.  Now if my apple pencil would magically show up this week instead of December I'd be truly happy.  I really do love the iPad pro and was disconcerted after the charge hard reset issue.

Also this is in regards to the issue where the iPad pro is 100% charged but won't turn on or appears not to turn on until you do a hard reset.  I haven't had the issue where the battery is drained.  Hopefully my research helps some others out there, although if you don't have an extra cable or a cable from an appletv 4 then it may be hard to verify this yourself.  I will be doing more testing to see if I can completely validate this.  Will be leaving my ipad on the charger tonight with the Apple TV 4 cable to validate that it works beyond the 4 hour 100% charge test that I did.  Again, charged to 100% and then left on the charger for four hours with the screen off.  Cable that comes with the box causes the ipad to have to be force hard restarted.  Apple TV 4 cable and it doesn't do the blank screen non wake up screen, it wakes up properly with the press of he home button or the power button, or unplugging the iPad pro.

I Just tried charging my iPad up to 100% charge, then waited to see what happened. 15 minutes after reaching 100%, the iPad could still wake by pressing the home button. But then around 45 minutes, it switched to the white screen with Apple logo, then went into a reboot loop every few minutes. When I disconnected the lightening cable, the rebooting stopped and it displayed the lock screen without locking up. Not sure what the significance of this is.

A few people claim to have had success by restoring back to factory defaults without restoring from a previous backup.

Updating to public beta (9.2) seems to have fixed it for me, iPad was at 100% before sleeping and didn't lock up this morning even though it was connected all night to the charger. Will try again tonight.

Air plane mode didn't solve the problem for me. Then I did a full swipe and restored the iPad pro as new. After 8 hours of recharge it could wake up without any problem. I left the charging cable in and put it to sleep again. Two hours later the iPad had restarted in its sleep as I had to login using my code and not could use the fingerprint reader.  128 GB LTE.

I had the same issue happen to me on day 2 of ownership. After a few hours of charging, it wouldn't turn on and I had to force restart it. But it only happened that one time and I have had no other like issues in the last three days.

Overnight  Airplane mode makes no difference, still hard reset needed to wake up the iPad.

THis is is ridiculous Apple, on a premium product you should have picked this up before shipping. It's not as if recharging the product was some obscure action, at least give us some official notice that you're aware of this and Working on a solutiom.

Not pleased about this at all.
