Q: Ipad Pro shuts off while charging and requires a hard reset to turn on

Hello,

I got my iPad Wednesday, spent the evening getting it all setup.  Restored from back up, ensured everything was there, wiped my iPad air 2 (sold it), deleted it's back up and went on with my normal routine.

At night it was down to 40% so I charged it and went to bed.  When I woke up it was "dead".  It wouldn't wake up.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to come to life.  Worked on it for a couple of hours and had to run an errand.  Plugged it back in as I was going to need a full charge later that day.  Came back to it, same thing.  Dead.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to turn on.

Used it more, then last night plugged it in and this morning, same thing.  I am thinking that there is an issue with this iPad.

I am now restoring it, since that it what online support recommended I try.  Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Thanks.

I had a few issues with my new Pro, apple support didn't really help so i downloaded the BETA version of the new update 9.2, solved all my issues.

Last night I downloaded iOS 9.2.3 beta, let my iPad pro 128 LTE run down to 71% charge then charged overnight and did not need to do a hard reset this morning.

I'm having the exact same problem.  May have to download the beta software, seems to be the only fix...or use my Apple TV lightning cable ...Which someone said may work to charge the ipad pro

    AIRPLANE MODE!

I saw that this worked for someone else in this thread. I switched it to Airplane mode, let it charge from 30 to 100 and no problem!

Will try it again overnight, but seems to be working until the final release of 9.2.

AAfter reading a number of threads, I saw that someone had success by turning off the Handoff button. After two days of being forced to do a hard reset, last night I charged overnight and no problems this morning. Don't know if this is the solution and will try again tonight.  Obviously it as a poor solution as you lose functionality but until Apple gets this straightened out.  Will post again tomorrow after seeing what happens tonight.

I Purchased 2 iPad Pro, both 128 LTE.  1 has the problem requiring hard reset after charging, the other seems fine

Exactly same backup on both? or different backups? If different, it could be app-related.

I posted yesterday that using my Apple TV 4 cable worked, and I can indeed confirm that my iPad pro did not lock up when charged to 100% and let sit for more than 5 hours plugged in.  I am using iOS 9.1.   Since some people are saying handoff, and others saying airplane mode, it very well may be a software issue, but just want people to know, that I have left those items on and had success now multiple times using a different cable than the one that shipped with my iPad pro.  If you have tried turning handoff off and airplane mode off and are still having problems, you may want to try the different cable option.  That may also be why some people are seeing the issue with one iPad out of the two that they bought.

i am going to see if I can get it to lock up with my ipad pro cable, and then see if I plug in my Apple TV cable if that will actually pull it out of it's locked up state.  Will let people know later today what the outcome is.

ipad pro, no case, no cover, Bluetooth on, wifi on, no lte activated yet.  (Gold lte version 128GB).

Also I have had nightmode turned on and off and that doesn't seem to affect the Apple TV cable charging it and not locking it up, and I had mail and safari running this last time as well.  I've had the lockups with the shipped iPad pro cable with apps running, and without apps running.  So far I believe it to be a faulty cable, or iOS 9.1 hasn't been programmed to deal with the shipped cable properly, or a combination of that.  I'm not sure why the apple Tv cable is working properly while the longer iPad pro one isn't, but it is.

I Also have the same problem. It's happened twice now. Should I return the iPad Pro for a new one?  Or wait for a fix?

Sounds like there are two possible solutions, 1. try a different cable (I've had success with an Apple TV 4 cable) Or 2. Try to install the beta of iOS 9.2.3 as that seems to be fixing it for people as well.  I myself am using 9.1 and the Apple TV 4 cable and not had any lock ups since.  I have not had any lockups since switching cables.  I think there's a problem with some of the cables being shipped with the iPad pro's.

TThe iPad's have different backups.  The other difference is the one having the problem uses the cable and power block that came with the Pro, the device that is not having a problem uses the cable but is plugged into a Brooksrone device that charges multiple items.  Tonight I will try a different cable and power block.

FYI, shutdown my iPad pro, plugged into charging cable provided with machine and let it start up. Switched on airplane mode and charged overnight. No hard reset required this am...

Changed cable to charge with overnight and all was fine.  I'm still running iOS 9.1.  Did not turn on airplane mode or anything, left it as usual.

So I am guessing it's 9.1 with this new cable as it seems that the .2 beta's fix it.
