Q: Ipad Pro shuts off while charging and requires a hard reset to turn on

Hello,

I got my iPad Wednesday, spent the evening getting it all setup.  Restored from back up, ensured everything was there, wiped my iPad air 2 (sold it), deleted it's back up and went on with my normal routine.

At night it was down to 40% so I charged it and went to bed.  When I woke up it was "dead".  It wouldn't wake up.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to come to life.  Worked on it for a couple of hours and had to run an errand.  Plugged it back in as I was going to need a full charge later that day.  Came back to it, same thing.  Dead.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to turn on.

Used it more, then last night plugged it in and this morning, same thing.  I am thinking that there is an issue with this iPad.

I am now restoring it, since that it what online support recommended I try.  Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Thanks.

I work at a school and one of our iPad Air 2's is doing this.

I took it to Apple and they told me to keep track of when it does it and if it keeps doing it to bring it back. Initially I had to do a restore, and now every time I charge it overnight, when I get back to it, it wont start the normal way, it must be a hard restart.

Changed cable to charge with overnight and all was fine.  I'm still running iOS 9.1.  Did not turn on airplane mode or anything, left it as usual.

So I am guessing it's 9.1 with this new cable as it seems that the .2 beta's fix it.

Oh forgot to add.  I used an existing charging cable (non-apple but certified) and did not have the issue this morning.  I used the long lightning cable that came with the iPad Pro on my iPhone 6 plus last night and no problems with that.

So I am still thinking but reading everything here that it is either this new long cable, or iOS 9.1 or both relative to the iPad Pro ONLY.  I'm not going to upgrade to any beta or take my iPad into the Genuis Bar.  Going to wait for an iOS update or other solution from Apple.  Otherwise, it works fine.

I agree.  I see the potential, and actually have been using my ipad pro more than any other device / computer in my household.  I just don't like the fact that I was having to hard reset it, and I'm sure it's upsetting to people that don't know how to hard reset it, nor making people who are having the issue feel in love with the device.  I've changed eco-systems in the past for such reasons like that.  Who wants to have to deal with resetting devices to work with them?  Not I.  Part of the reason why I'm trying to track down what exactly causes it and see if I can replicate the problem consistently and replicate a solution consistently.  Especially since there seems to be no word coming out of Cupertino.  (I don't think people should expect it, but it's disconcerting nonetheless).

Also, for the record, people who may think why not jump ship then?  Well, we're talking about a device that saves everything in the state it's in, and if my ipad locks up and I have to do a reset once a day, that's 15 seconds of my life once a day.  My windows laptop that was rebooting itself or crashing every 40 minutes was not 15 seconds of my life once a day.

Of course, if my apple pencil had shipped at the same time as my iPad Pro I would only be slightly annoyed.  As it is, 60% of the reason I bought this isn't here, so that means the annoyance at the current issue is consuming a large portion of that other 40% of my reasoning, thus right now, making me pretty grumpy about it.  Once I get the pencil I'm sure my grumpiness will turn back into small annoyance till it's fixed, and then when it's fixed become pretty indispensable.

Same issue.  Each morning after having been on charger overnight, hard reset is required.  I have 128GB LTE model.  I have cellular data turned off as I am running off WiFi in my home office.  Glad to hear it's not just me; disappointed that it is any of us.

I am using a short lightning cable with iPad charger and I having the same issue.  Hoping it is software and a fix is in the works.

Same issue here, however it happens to me even when not charging. I don't see any app that would crash it. i only have a few installed. never happens while in use though. only when sleeping, charging state doesn't seem to matter.

It is a less severe problem, but there are many people whose iphone screen doesn't light in the morning for alarms or calls.

Screen stays dark when alarm goes off in the morning

I have an iPro Pro 128GB LTE that I did restore from an iCloud backup when I initially set it up. Last night was the first night I plugged it in overnight for a full recharge and woke up this morning to this issue. The iPad appeared "dead" and I have to press and hold power and home button for a while to hard reboot it. It booted up ok and showed 100%.

iPad Pro 128GB LTE.  Set up as a new device.

This morning required a 2-button hard reset, and it restarted and had a 100% charge.

I was able to replicate the problem many times. I had the IPad pro not restart after charging hit 100%. I needed to do a hard restart. I turned off  "backup to ICloud''.  Did this multiple times and I have not had the problem again. Hope this helps

I Posted before and I too have the problem.  2 things.  I've used different cables to charge and it happened with each.  I do notice that everyone posting seems to have a 128gb with cellular.  is anyone having this problem with 32 gb and if you have cellular did you take the SIM card from the other divice or is it a new sim.. I took mine from old iPad air2.  Wondering if there is a connection.....  Apple lets go some answers?????

iPad Pro 128 GB Wi-Fi.  As many users here, I'm having the same issue - I just wanted to add that the first two nights I had the iPad Pro I had connected it using my older iPad's charger & cord and both nights I'm fairly certain I had some big downloads as well - iMovie, Keynote etc... over 650MB or more of downloads - not sure that has anything to do with this issue, but thought it worth mentioning.  On a side note, I only sync to my iMac 5K when connected - I do not sync over Wi-Fi nor do I sync to iCloud - since I've read some folks say stop syncing to iCloud to fix the issue - I never have yet still had the issue.  To recap - my first 2 nights had big downloads while charging using my older iPad's connecter/charger to wall outlet.  Both mornings had to do hard restart.  Then, I started using the new lightning cable/charger and have not had any major downloads. I have not had it happen since - not to say it will not happen again - but my initial thought was it was related to heavy downloads?  I'm on a slow DSL network using older gen Airports.  Not very scientific, but it is my current thinking.

I pulled the Apple sim and inserted an ATT sim so I could use their family plan.

I'm not going to do a backup/restore, or anything else and hold out for a software update.

Although it would be amusing to make Genius appointments for each of my devices acting flaky on waking from long sleep.

It seems that the problem is not necessarily related to charging the device, but to a bug with iCloud backup. iOS will backup to iCloud when connected to a wireless network and charging at the same time. And charging the device overnight will surely reproduce this crash...

Can anyone else confirm this by disabling their backups temporarily and overnight?
