Q: Ipad Pro shuts off while charging and requires a hard reset to turn on

Hello,

I got my iPad Wednesday, spent the evening getting it all setup.  Restored from back up, ensured everything was there, wiped my iPad air 2 (sold it), deleted it's back up and went on with my normal routine.

At night it was down to 40% so I charged it and went to bed.  When I woke up it was "dead".  It wouldn't wake up.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to come to life.  Worked on it for a couple of hours and had to run an errand.  Plugged it back in as I was going to need a full charge later that day.  Came back to it, same thing.  Dead.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to turn on.

Used it more, then last night plugged it in and this morning, same thing.  I am thinking that there is an issue with this iPad.

I am now restoring it, since that it what online support recommended I try.  Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Thanks.

update, 128 gb lte ... used same cable from iPad air 2 as i have been and last night used airplane mode. this morning while still connected it was on and 100% charged.  I never use ICloud for backup so I don't think that's the issue. I will try without airplane mode tonight and post results.  Seems like software issue hopefully. Cant believe they didn't see  this during testing since so many of us are having this problem, also Apple needs to address this. Say something like its being worked on. Lets go Apple this isn't right....!

until now, i don't have that problem with my pro (128GB, WIFI/LTE). I configured it as a new device and did not restored it from a backup. And i live in a country with 230V AC, if that makes a difference.

For those of you who have contacted support and were told to wait for update, did they mention how soon that might be?

i hd both of,your problems. I reinstalled 9.1 by resetting to factory setting via iTunes, which puts in a clean, new iOS. Sounds like going to 9.2 Beta does the same thing. Then I reinstalled my backup from my Air, from which Imwas upgrading. That ended the crashes, but I had your,iCloud ID entering issue. Found a post that suggested log out of iCloud in settings. Then, do a hard restart and then log back in. i did this and no longer have that problem either.

    hope this helps.

As others have posted most of us who have installed the 9.2 beta have not had a repeat of the issue. All the erasing and restoring is unnecessary and will probably just cause other problems. The same issue presented itself to many of us on our iPhone 6S on the then released iOS 9 software. Again since 9.2 that issue has not happened again on my devices. I wouldn't rush out and install a beta but 9.2 should be released shortly and should resolve the issue for most.

I talked today with the German support via phone. They did not know anything about the "wake up"-problem. The first guy asked his colleagues about this issue and they advised me to reinstall/reset the iPad Pro totally. I referenced to this discussion and said that this would not help anymore. Then I was told to start a remote diagnosis. The consultant recognized that I am using iOS 9.1 and he said that this would be strange because the iPad Pro was delivered with iOS 9.0. I responded that the split screen modus was introduced not before 9.1, and that this mode is especially for the iPad Pro.

Conclusion: The support learned from me and not vice versa.  It is a shame. I spent about 40 minutes of my time for this teaching lesson!

But the consultant could confirm that there is a problem with the POP3 accounts on iOS 9.1: The "This email could not be loaded from server"-error will be resolved in 9.2. A litte consolation.

I Bought 3 iPad pros the first day they were available. One of each color for family members. I use the silver one and have not had a single issue. The rose gold one has not even been opened yet as I am waiting on the return of the person who will be using it. The third a space grey is another story. We did the exact same thing as far as setting it up as I did on the silver one, a restore from a cloud backup. Everything seemed fine until the next day when upon unplugging it from the charger a hard restart was required. This took an exceptionally long time, longer than on any other iOS device. I also noticed Netflix was open which I'm certain I hadn't opened. Wiped, reloaded from cloud backup and the same hard restart was required after fully charging. Netflix was open again. I also heard a minor creaking sound emanating around the camera. It felt as if it wasn't sealed properly, hard to explain, but seemed almost as if something was loose. Returned the pro for a replacement, set the new one up and experienced the same required hard restart upon removing it from the charger. Netflix was open again. Removed the Netflix app thinking it was the root of the problem. It wasn't since hard restarts are still required after a full charge. I'm a bit leary of the rose gold having the same issues since the owner of it is technically challenged. Personally, although I could be wrong, I think it is a battery issue. Is it possible that some of the batteries get fully charged and send a signal to the os that they are fully deplete of power thus shutting down the whole thing and a hard restart resets the software governing the battery allowing a working product? After the replacement of one of these and it too having issues and with the same issue happening to far too many others Apple needs to address this and soon.

How do you do the hard reset? My brand new iPad Pro (I am in the UK) just froze after charging and Apple are saying return it - they hadn't heard of this problem before - obviously there are major faults!

Hold the power button on top and the home button at the same time, and keep both held for about 10 seconds and then you will see the Apple logo as it reboots.

Press and hold down the home button on the front of the device at the same time you press and hold down the on/off button.  Keep holding until the apple appears and then release.  Could take up to 10-12 seconds

Got my Pro last Thursday and no problem until today. Normally leave on charge in sleep mode and no problems occurred but turned off last night when at about 40% charge for first time and left on charge. Picked up this afternoon and wouldn't start up. Tried hard reset a couple of times as suggested in this post and suddenly came to life.  There is clearly a problem to be sorted.

Me too. Pro with 128 gigs, wifi only, running 9.1. Plug it in at bedtime and it won't wake up in the morning. It seems to have been doing a restore from the cloud every night.,at least I have a message at the lock screen saying "restore in progress". Dont really understand what that's about, or why the Pro seems to be trying to do a restore every time I turn it on. Anyway, holding the home button and on switch together for at least ten seconds wakes it from its coma. Guessing that it's a software, not a hardware issue, but let's see a fix, please.

I have not had this problem yet. I'm not sure if this is the reason, but I never restored the iPad Pro, from my iPad Air's back up on my Mac, or in iCloud. Sense I was to use  different APPs than I had on my Air. I installed the APP's I wanted to use directly from the APP Store. I'll keep you posted if I start having the shut down problem.
