Nov 17, 2015 3:06 AM in response to misiscoby turingtest2,Every item you add to your library is assigned a media kind, e.g. Music, Movie, Audiobook, TV Show etc. In some cases you can change the media kind via Get Info > Options. Your library or device will create containers for each of these media kinds. In addition you can create playlists, which are not limited to a single media kind. You can add and remove items from regular lists, or make smart playlists that use rules to determine what goes into them. Playlist folders contain all of the items that are in the playlists that are inside the folder. You don't directly edit the playlist folder, but can edit the playlists within it.

Nov 17, 2015 11:42 AM in response to turingtest2by misisco,Interesting.
I remember years ago when I plugged in my ipod, ...."ITUNES" would come up and i did everything through that as an interface. NOW - I get what you see in the screen cap. Just an ipod classic interface on its own. This is the problem why I am getting confused. I consider myself pretty resourceful and not lame to devices, but this has me stumped as to how I created folders in the past and moved things around randomly, .....and now i'm clueless!
Dragging and dropping into even existing folders is definitely NOT working.
What I AM doing is dragging an MP4 icon from my laptop directly into "Movies" and then loading it up THAT way.
Maybe this is where I am running into issues regarding assigning?

Nov 17, 2015 11:53 AM in response to misiscoby turingtest2,iTunes is somewhat sketchy when it comes to a manually managed device and playlist folders. In fact I might be surprised it has even let you create them. What I do is organize all my content in iTunes, then tell it to sync certain playlists to the device. I get exactly what I want copied over. You cannot drag items directly to a playlist folder which seems to be what you're trying to do. Make playlists instead. You can put one or more playlists, or playlist folders inside a playlist folder, but you can only drag content to a playlist. Smart playlists are adjusted by changing the rules.
If you have content on the device that isn't in your library see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device. Recover all of your media before switching to automatic syncing, if you decide to do so.

Nov 17, 2015 11:59 AM in response to turingtest2by misisco,If I wanted to do this old school and doing this through the itunes interface . . .
How would I make itunes come up like in the old days?
I dont have a paid account where I can shop. I just opened one though but dont see anywhere where it would recognize my ipod devcice.
I remember it coming up automatically in the old days as soon as I plugged in.

Nov 17, 2015 12:05 PM in response to misiscoby turingtest2,That is a download page for the current version of iTunes. iTunes is already installed. You've shown me screenshots.
The old pre-iTunes 12 sidebar has gone, so you now select your device using the 5th icon across the top in your first image, the one that looks like your iPod. The playlists view that you shown above allows you to connect a manually managed device to iTunes can play content from it through the computer.
