Q: Problems with mail in iOS 9

I have updated my iPad generation 4 to iOS 9. First the iPad froze when it updated to the OS, I had to press and hold down both buttons for a few seconds in order to restart the iPad.

I have now discovered that the contents of all of my email are missing, the emails are still there but they lack content, it only says  "The letter has not been downloaded from the server." The contents of the e-mail is visible the first time I open them, but the next time the content is gone.

How do I recover the contents of my email?

Just the messenger. Best to discuss his opinion directly with your fellow Level Seven user.

My opinion...There is an issue that affects some users...Customers who were happy and now are not happy because something changed when IOS9 was released.

Coding or magic, again, a matter of opinion.

Meanwhile, the thread contains advice and solutions from users who are affected on how they have mitigated or dealt with the impact.

Apparently this is because the mail app has limited space to store messages (ie not infinite, fortunately).

Try deleting the oldest and biggest messages from your Sent folder and emptying the Trash folder.  This should free some space and stop the problem occuring again (for a while)

THe way I get back a message is to

    1.  Empty Trash

    2. Delete the message

    3. Open messgae in Trash and Move it back to Inbox.

This only works for recent messages that are still on the seever.

    Does that help?

i see the ability to choose IMAP or POP on the 2nd screen as always. I'm using iOS 9.1 but this always worked like this:

Before iOS9, I often had 200-300 messages (some with attachments, though none all that big) in my inbox; some were weeks old. No problem reading them.

All that convenience went away with iOS9.

If the message isn't still in the server inbox (inbox, not just "on the server"), and my device isn't connected, then "this message has not been downloaded", or only part of it still shows.

I do not have messages deleted from server automatically from any computer or device. I manage it all manually (deleting, filing, spam-check, etc.).

    Except that...

The whole problem is somewhat inconsistent -- not all the messages "disappear" (I haven't figured out what attributes allow them to "stay" or "go"). Just to make it more obvious that they are really in the device "somewhere" -- the preview lines are still readable in the list view! And flagged messages stay flagged, so at least I know what I had marked to deal with "later" even if I can't see the details.

I'm gradually adapting to my iphone mail not being any use other than a brief (maybe one-time) preview. IOW it's no longer any good as a reference to look back later, or a place to re-read long messages (e.g. some newsletter/updates) another day. Less time on phone, more time at desk.

If Apple does fix this problem with an update sometime (not holding my breath) I doubt I would ever feel as confident in the mail app as a useful and convenient tool as I have these past several years.

EVryone on this thread should go to apple.com/feedback and register your problems with iOS 9 problems.   Apple doesn't pay that much attention to these forums. They do aggregate the direct communications though the /feedback portal to prioritize problems.

I put in feedback on the subject some time ago.

I'm not all that confident that they will consider it "important" -- POP being outdated & untrendy & all. I'll count it as a happy surprise if they fix it, and be on edge that future OS updates/upgrades will break it again.

I have been having problems with Apple Mail on my iPhone 6 ever since the iOS 9.1 update - I couldn't send or receive email at all. Apple Support couldn't figure it out, even after chatting/emailing back and forth with three different support specialists. At this point, I should mention that I only use my iPhone as a phone when I am home, so this problem was only noticed when I was out and about. Anyway, long story short, Apple Mail had had the ability to use cellular data turned off. I turned it back on in Settings and all is well again.

I Have the same issue with pop3 mail. My ISP is Bell Sympatico and I leave mail on the server.

I Tried to downgrade to iOS 8.4.1, which failed and forced me re-install iOS 9.1 and then restore from iTunes backup.

Still have same problem a day later.

My server keeps the messages for months too, and the problem ones are still there ..

I didn't have the problem before, not until I went to iOS 9 (or it may have been 8).  So it looks like a bug to me, that was introduced recently by Apple.

Ps don't forget to go to the original message and tick "I have this problem too" , this may raise its priority with Apple.

    Also submit feedback.

I put in some feedback messages ages ago, as soon as I realized that it wasn't "just me".

I'm not holding out much hope of getting the mail app back to its pre-iOS9 usefulness.

I use the list of messages (and the 5 lines of preview) as a reminder of what to deal with back at my PC (though if Apple hears about even this remaining functionality they may get rid of even keeping the header/preview lines as well).

Thanks for the hint, Fogey22, I have increased the number of lines Previewed  too.  Good idea.  :-)

Just to let eveyone kmow I have been on the phone with Apple Support twice over the past three months. In both cases they have reluctantly acknowledged this is a known bug with no current solution. They suggested using Outlook on my PC as a work around (how is that for a solution)! They claim there is a fix in the works, but they said the same thing after 9.01. Not sure why they can't fix what would seen to be a simple issue with POP accounts. They worked fine with IOS 8.

Oh and as an aside for those of you dealing with PhillyPhan. This guy may actually be the ghost of Steve Jobs since I seem to remember him talking about buying a house just after WWII. That would make him about 100 if he is in fact still alive. Oh and for your info Philly this isn't a problem with a minority of users. It involves everyone with POP accounts from certain providers, like Verizon. So the numbers are well over 100,000. The reason most people haven't complained is that Apple makes the process nearly impossible, people just deal with the issue or they don't spend their time trolling Apple Support Forums like you. But at your age you probably don't have much else to do.

If all of your post is as inaccurate as the parts referring to Philly then I now know what your informations is worth.
