Q: Ipad Pro shuts off while charging and requires a hard reset to turn on

Hello,

I got my iPad Wednesday, spent the evening getting it all setup.  Restored from back up, ensured everything was there, wiped my iPad air 2 (sold it), deleted it's back up and went on with my normal routine.

At night it was down to 40% so I charged it and went to bed.  When I woke up it was "dead".  It wouldn't wake up.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to come to life.  Worked on it for a couple of hours and had to run an errand.  Plugged it back in as I was going to need a full charge later that day.  Came back to it, same thing.  Dead.  I needed to perform a hard reset to get it to turn on.

Used it more, then last night plugged it in and this morning, same thing.  I am thinking that there is an issue with this iPad.

I am now restoring it, since that it what online support recommended I try.  Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Thanks.

Had the same trouble here, overnight charge and the iPad was compleet off. 128GB version. Contacted Apple and the advise was to install as a new iPad in iTunes. This did not solve the problem. After that the Apple helpdesk suggested to bring in the iPad and change it for a new one. I suggested to the Helpdesk to use my develloper account and install IOS 9.2 beta 3 and then check iff this will help. After installing 9.2 beta 3 and charge overnight to 100% no problem anymore. So this is not hardware related but this is firmware related. This morning used the iPad and reload again and everything works fine now. Hope this will help for all people wit the same trouble and are able to install the beta.

I am in the UK and got my iPad Pro on Friday, as they were only released here a day before - same thing for me after charging it was just dead - it seems Apple have a problem and they know about it but why didn't support tell me about dead starting it - however I thinks its dreadful that a new product is sent with a defect and I am certainly returning it to make the point and won't just be searching forums etc to get it up and running - its an expensive unit and its Apple's problem and not mine! Someone else reported previously on this post that they did not have the problem after switching cables.

I received my 128GB gold Verizon cellular iPad Pro Monday, and restored it from my iPad 2 backup in iCloud.  I plugged it in for an overnight charge, and it was bricked the next morning, I had to do a hard reset.  I reported it to a Sr Apple advisor yesterday, and sent her a link to this post so she could see everyone having the same problem.  She believes IOS 9.02 will be released very soon because of this, possibly as early as this week.

Anyhow, last night,  I swapped my charging cable and used a 3' AmazonBasics cable to charge it lieu of the 6' cable that it came with.  This morning, it fired up without a hitch.  So now i'm wondering if that is just a coincidence, or if somehow the 6' cable is an issue?  It doesn't make sense to me how it could be, but, I didn't have the problem this morning after NOT using it.  It would be a good idea for others here to try it too and see if it works.

Appears to be fixed.  I've done nothing but charge overnight.  This is my second iPad Pro.  Both had same issue.  Did nothing but charge over night for the last two nights and the issue appears to be gone. Wakes right up and ready instantly with no other issues at all.

Did you backup from iCloud?  And if so, did it happen the first night, while iCloud might have been finishing the restore, and then brick the next morning?  Just a theory, but perhaps the next day it was finished restoring from the cloud, and then it wasn't doing any of that the next night and thus didn't have the problem.

My scenario is the above, except that I did swap cables and used a different cable the 2nd night.  I don't know if that helped, or if it was because iCloud backup was not doing any further restoring.

Been having the same problem since last Friday. Posted a few times. 2 nights ago I tried the airplane trick and now 2 times in a row haven't had the problem.

I have the same issue. A hard reset gets it working again. I have only charged it twice, and it worked fine all day. May as well wait for a fix from Apple.

My local Apple Store replaced my 128GB wi-fi+cellular iPad Pro and the second one worked fine the first night but then, after I loaded a bunch more apps on it, I experienced the same problem when I woke up this morning. In both cases I started them as new iPads from scratch rather than restoring. But in the second case I didn't have time to really download all the apps I need before the first evening charge. It seems loading up the iPad with stuff is what triggers this.

    I'm downloading the public beta.

BTW,  anyone can sign up for the public beta - just go to https://beta.apple.com

Also - the Apple Pencil is just totally amazing!  It really transforms the iPad Pro for any sort of applications where you're marking up, or editing, images!

So last night I had it in airplane mode and it charged without issue. So I am thinking it might be related to iCloud or some other network process. I am getting a replacement today so I am hoping that solves the issues.

Same issue here, 128gb cellular silver.

What seems worked to me is starting as a new device and not from any backup (icloud nor itunes).

So first off i DONT have this issue and never had since i got it 12.11.2015.

Maybe it still helps to figure out the cause so i add my 2 cents...

    - Model: iPad Pro 128GB (no LTE)

    - Location: Germany

    - iOs: 9.1.x whatever the newest official is, didnt install beta as i have no issues

    - Setup: fresh device without iCloud or iTunes backup, used existing Apple ID

    - Backup: also didn't setup iCloud or any other backup

    - Loading procedure: I always fully drained to 0% until it turned off and loaded to 100% since i got it (4x times). Never loaded while using it. Did not switch on Airplane mode while loading.

    - Apps: Few Games (10) and some Apps like Infuse, VLC, IMDB, Skype, Google Maps, YouTube, SkyGo

    - Other stuff to mention: watched some trailers/movies, played games a few hours, surfed with Safari, tried the split screen few times, conntected to MacBook Air (Late 2010) and checked iTunes to check if connection is working

I've had the lockup issue and didn't do a restore.  I set my ipad up as a new device and downloaded apps from the store.  I think there is something though to the network adapter driver or syncing.  I'm the one that mentioned swapping cables worked for me.  In fact last night my ipad was at 27% and it charged up to 100% overnight with no lockups using the lightning cable from my apple tv 4.

Let's just hope ios 9.2 fixes things.

I've had it lock up with apps running, with no apps running, charging from < 40%, charging from < 98%.. BUT all the lockups occurred with the original cable/charger combo that shipped.

One interesting thing to note, I plugged my original cable/charger into a surge protector that had nothing else plugged into it, and I haven't experienced any lockups the last few days when using it.  So not sure about that...  (The other lockups seemed to happen when I had an additional iphone 12W charger hooked up to the same surge protector).

UPDATE: After having this issue the first 2 nights - waking up to a black screen after charging and downloading while I slept - I've not had the issue since.  I have not changed any of my settings.  I've been using the Apple Case & Smart Cover (in covered position usually but not always) while charging.  I have never backed up to iCloud, but I do download misc apps at night if I see them available for download.   My initial and only set up so far on this iPad Pro has been a restore from backup from my previous older iPad 4th Gen.  I sync while connected to iTunes on my iMac.  I do NOT set it to Do Not Disturb nor do I put it in Airplane mode while I charge - I just leave it ON as it is all day but usually covered with smart cover but not always since the smart cover arrived last Friday - and one night I had about 400MB of downloads with smart cover open and woke with no issue at all - so my initial theory that it was related to large downloads while connected as the cause is not very sound.  iPad Pro 128GB Wi-Fi with Apple Case & Smart Cover.

gvd1, I read your post, but I don't believe this is the issue (or at least not commonplace to the rest of us).  I have the Wi-Fi + LTE version of the device and tried the Airplane Mode overnight charge to see if that's the issue.  No dice.  The night prior (first night with the device) it downloaded a lot of updates from an iPad 4th Generation upgrade, much like your situation and I endured the same issue which prompted me to explore community solutions eventually leading me here.  I agree with the many members/contributors to this thread that we need to inundate Apple Tech Support with assistance demand signals in order to get this issue the attention it deserves.  This is an otherwise resplendent piece of technological art... I am hoping this minor inconvenience has a quick fix in the next update.

A new firmware version was released yesterday. It's still 9.1 but it has a new build number. It was only updated for iPad Pro. This morning, I woke up to a locked up iPad Pro as described in this issue. So I decided to restore against this new build to see if it fixes this issue.

Has anyone else already tried this?
