Q: Firefox helps but slows down older MacBook

Recently encountered lots of glitches in websites while running Safari on an older (white) MacBook.

For example, there was incomplete information on Twitter.

Those glitches went away when I started using a Firefox browser.

BUT now I encounter frequent slowdowns on the MacBook, which is running Snow Leopard 10.6.8, that require a restart.

Advice?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8), null

    on an older (white) MacBook.

You need to be more specific. What model MacBook, how much RAM does it have?

You may need to see what the Activity Monitor shows for system related specification

regarding hard disk drive capacity (total) verses the remaining unused capacity; also

separate from that, the total memory (RAM) in use verses the amount left or not used.

The latter item here can show the combined problem, if your hard drive is too full of

saved user-generated content; as the OS X will try & use hard drive capacity as a form

of Virtual Memory, and that will slow the computer somewhat if there is little left and if

the computer is trying to perform several tasks. You can archive your excess to an

    externally enclosed hard drive, if images or music certain rules apply for libraries;

and then see about removing the original from the internal computer hard disk drive.

Be sure to make a quality backup of your content, the computer system, and also have

a good Time Machine backup in addition. A full system clone (carboncopy, or superduper)

can be very helpful to restore the computer if the hard drive has failed and you need

to be able to run the computer to format a new hard drive, and install it. It can run the Mac.

Sometimes to restart in 'Safe mode' can help to troubleshoot, depending on the cause.

Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support

If you have started using or have an active antivirus application it may be slowing the Mac

so turn it off; most AV scanning applications cannot find what does not exist in the wild.

At least do not let it run all the time. Use careful browsing habits to avoid issues such as

malware and adware. If you installed MacKeeper or any of those cleanmymac items, they

can be the cause of system damages and data loss; and a slow mac.

If you think or aren't sure if there is something such as adware in your mac, you can read

about manual methods to seek and remove adware, also some malware items, manually.

    Adware Removal Guide:

    http://www.thesafemac.com/arg/

For other companion guides, from thesafemac, see Tech Guides page:

    http://www.thesafemac.com/tech-guides/

Hopefully you can find the issue and resolve it; not sure if the Etrecheck application that

can create a report that you could post in a discussion (so others can see what shows)

will work in OS X 10.6.8. A few other tools that are newer, do not work in Snow Leopard.

The hard disk drive may be failing, as the issue you state can be a real symptom.

Make a good backup and plan on replacing the HDD. -- You can get a faster spin

rate (RPM, 7200) instead of a stock (RPM, 5400) model, and maybe also upgrade

the memory total from 2GB to 6GB, by purchase of upgrade capacity RAM chips.

    In any event...

    Good luck & happy computing!

    Hello K,

Yes. EtreCheck does work on OS X 10.6.8 "Snow Leopard".

Wasn't certain, & had not read in-depth on that aspect recently.

The former AdwareMedic had backward compatible limits, so

this is part of my reasoned reply. So the pages by Thomas w/

earlier methods to find and remove adware, etc were added...

Thank you for the confirmation of Etrecheck in this regard.

And thank you for your continued presence in these ASC.

    Hello Bigtex221,

It is unfortunate that MalwareBytes won't run on your machine. You have a lot of adware installed. EtreCheck really isn't an adware tool. I just don't have the resources to keep track of it all. That is why I rely on MalwareBytes to handle the adware. EtreCheck uses Apple's adware removal instructions. The problem is that Apple's instructions are way out of date and pretty bad to begin with.

I suggest you go to the old AdwareMedic site and use these manual removal instructions: http://www.thesafemac.com/arg-identification/

I am pretty sure that everything under "User Launch Agents" in your EtreCheck report is adware. All of your Safari extensions appear to be adware too.

Are you sure you want the Citrix software? That is a remote access program.

Finally, you could benefit from more RAM. Here are OWC memory upgrades for your machine: http://eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?sort=pop&model=280&type=Memory

    Thanks for the insight!

I deleted a few extension in Safari already.

I think I can get the rest manually, and I'll tackle those User Launch Agents.

Sadly, I need Citrix for a work-related program. But I'm ready for more RAM, obviously.

Something occurred to me. I've seen a bit of a slowdown on my Mac Mini. But that's running 10.9, which means Adware Medic can deal with it directly.

    Thanks again. Very helpful information!
