Q: macbook startup goes to grey apple and loading bar (not wheel) then nothing

Hi yesterday my macbook had a funny moment with the screen ( it went all squiggly no problems before?) So I had to do a hard reset as I couldn't see what I was doing, well now when I turn it back on the Apple logo comes up the chime but with a loafing bar as if after you've updated it? Well it gets about half way and then disappears and just stays on the grey screen, I've tried booting it every way possible apart from a firewire cable.

Safe mode doesn't get past the half way mark

Revovery mode doesn't either (online recovery works until it's downloaded then disappears )

I've tried the extended hardware test which says everything is fine

I've used single user mode which does say it modifies something and then when I get it to say it's good nothing changes.

And when I try and boot from the original snow leopard all I get is 3 ding noises and nothing else happens? I am actually updated to lion.

Any suggestions to try would be helpful as my nearest mac store is a few hours away!!

Three tones indicates failed or incompatible ram About Mac computer startup tones - Apple Support

Try removing and reseating the ram.

What specific Mac do you have?

This " (online recovery works until it's downloaded then disappears )": may indicate a bad startup disk. There is no place to store the what is downloaded via Internet Recovery.

You said "I've tried booting it every way possible apart from a firewire cable."

Do  you have another Mac with FW so you can boot the problem one in Target Disk Mode and try Repairing the disk on the problem one?

It's a 15 inch early 2011 macbook pro, I've got a firewire today to try and boot it from my other half's mac I tried the above comment about repeating the ram but that did nothing either, I would say it was ram but it's not constantly making the 3 ding noises only when I boot it with the disc in and 'c' does it make the noise.
