Q: Airdrop is not working on Mid 2013 Mac Book Air

I have a MacBook Air from Mid-2013 and the new iPhone 6S, both running their newest OS (Yosemite and iOS 9).

According to Apple, AirDrop only works on these machines:

Use AirDrop between iOS device and Mac: the iOS device has to be running iOS 8 and has to have a Lightning connector. the Mac needs to be running OS X Yosemite and needs to be a 2012 or newer iMac, 2012 or newer MacBook Air, 2012 or newer MacBook Pro, 2012 or newer Mac Mini or Late 2013 Mac Pro. (Source: 9to5Mac)

So technically it should be compatible, and I also met the necessary other requirements:

Once you have met compatible hardware and software requirements, the devices do have to have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on, even though it works without internet access

I have already tried to use Airdrop connectivity with iphone5 but it is not working for that also.

Please help anyone has the same problem. how did you resolved it ?

MacBook Air, iOS 5, null

    Hey himmy2711,

Congratulations on your purchase of the iPhone 6S.

If you are having difficulty with using AirDrop between your iPhone and your MacBook Air, use the tips in this article to help correct the issue - Use AirDrop to send content from your Mac.

Specifically use the section titled Tips for sending items -

If you don't see the recipient in the AirDrop window or sheet:

    • Make sure that both devices have AirDrop turned on and are within 30 feet (9 meters) of each other.
    • If you're sending to an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

      • Your Mac needs to be a 2012 or newer model with OS X Yosemite or later.
      •
      • The iOS device must have Personal Hotspot turned off in Settings > Cellular.
    • If you're sending to a Mac:

      • If the receiving Mac is using OS X Mavericks, Mountain Lion, or Lion, it needs to have an AirDrop window open: choose Go > AirDrop from the menu bar in the Finder.
      •
      • If the receiving Mac is a 2012 or older model, click “Don't see who you're looking for?” in the AirDrop window or sharing sheet of the sending Mac. Then click “Search for an Older Mac.”
      •
      • Find out if the Mac has “Block all incoming connections” turned on in Security & Privacy preferences. A Mac won't receive items using AirDrop if this setting is turned on.
    • If AirDrop on the receiving device is set up to receive items from contacts only, make sure that both devices are signed in to iCloud. Also make sure that the email address or phone number associated with your Apple ID is in the Contacts app of the receiving device.

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

    Happy computing.

I have followed "this tutorial" and I still cannot use AirDrop.

I was a very happy girl before I installed ElCapitan, I do want to believe that EC must be the problem!

That's exactly whats happening to me.

    Macbook Air mid 2013 11" with iPhone 5, 5S, 6.

Tried with Yosemite and later on with El Capitan but no way at all to transfer any file between them.

I went to Apple Store to talk with a Genius that, after some checks and test said: that's; give or take.

Of course I followed the above mentioned guide and I can't count how many restarts, switching off and on and double checks I did to be sure to not forgot anything, but so far Airdrop with my devices are simply not working.

Sad to say but looks like there is not any solution (except of course buy a brand new gadgets line... and cross my fingers).

    Hi Brett,

I followed every single point mentioned in your mail with all the scenarios mentioned but still Airdrop is not working with Mac book air 2013 (OS X EI Captain 10.11.2)

I bought i phone 6s so that it will be easy for to connect my phone and mac but now this main feature of iOS is not working.

Could you please help me again regarding this issue. As 'Dinaki1' and 'kls64' users also tried and for them also it is not working.

Please find some solution to this problem or any patch related to it.

Looking forward to hear from you a positive reply regarding this issue.

    Hi Brett,

I found some solution while surfing on net and suddenly Airdrop started working when i deleted i cloud from my phone and logged out from icloud from my Mac.

Why this is working after logging out from iCloud. Is there any issue with i cloud and Airdrop ? Coz again i have logged in iCloud and Airdrop stopped working.

could you please help me regarding this ?

    Thanks,

    Himanshi
