Q: screen black after wakeup

Hello,  after my mac wakes up, the screen stays black.

I know the computer is alive as i can hear the fan going, hard drive clicks and notification sounds etc, but the screen remain black.  The only remedy is to shut down and restart.

Any ideas, I've cleared the SMC and also done the apple, alt,P,R thing on restart without success.

It's an iMac retina late 2014

Thanks

    Heya Jonathan,

It sounds like you are able to tell that your computer is turning on but the screen is black and you see no video. I would recommend the troubleshooting in the following article about that kind of an issue. You want to look at the section titled "If the display image is blank or unusable":

Get help with video issues on external displays connected to your Mac

Apologies, I'm not sure what gave me the impression initially that you had an external display. Since you've already reset the SMC and the PRAM to help resolve this issue, I would next use these steps from the following article:

    • Disconnect external devices other than your Apple keyboard, mouse, and display. If that resolves the issue, gradually reconnect your devices, testing each time, until you find the device that is interfering with sleep. Then check the documentation that came with the device, or contact the device manufacturer.
    • Start up in Safe Mode to see if the issue is related to non-Apple startup items, login items, or kernel extensions.
    • Try to isolate the issue by using another user account
