Q: iMessage and FaceTime not working after iOS 9.1 update

For my mother's iPad Air 2 (WiFi):

We recently updated the the iOS software on my mother's iPad from 9.0.1 to the latest 9.1; she was scheduled to go into the hospital from over one month, so using this was the best means of communication for my entire family.

However, she discovered that she was unable to use both iMessage and FaceTime for some unknown reason; this only occured after the iOS update.

She kept getting an error message saying that either iMessage or FaceTime were unavailable.  She was able to log into iCloud, the App Store and iTunes using her the same username/password that she had tried with both iMessage and FaceTime, so that shouldn't be the issue.

After reading about similar problems faced by other users, she has tired every single reset method possible, but to no avail.  I am really running out of ideas as far as how to help her use her device to communicate with us while she is away, but at this point it seems like an issue with the latest iOS that is causing the problem.  Is there any fix in the foreseeable future or does my mother have a device in which two mainstay apps are useless to her?

Thank you in advance,

Jennifer

I'm not sure I can help, but answering these questions might give others some insight.  What exactly happens when she tries to use FaceTime or iMessage?  Is there a message that pops up, or what?

I don't think it was the 9.1 update by itself that is causing the problem.  It could be some other underlying problem that has now surfaced.  The reason I say this is that I have an iPad Air 2 with 9.1 installed and have had no problems at all with iMessage and FaceTime.  But, I do have the 128GB WIFI model.

If you go into Settings>Messages>iMessage, does it indicate that it is activated? The same with FaceTime. I do not have an iPad 2, but I have a first generation iPad Mini, and I have iOS 9.1 installed and have not experienced any issues with iMessage or FaceTime. You may need to turn off iMessage and FaceTime, then go into Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings and then go back in and activate iMessage and FaceTime, one at a time. Do not attempt to activate one until you have successfully activated the other. When you checked to see about using them, was this at home, or was this at the hospital? If the hospital, it could have been a network issue there that may need to be addressed.
