If you're seeing an excess of storage data taken up by Messages on your iPhone, then it's likely being caused by the storage of attachments sent in your message threads. To help alleviate the pressure on your storage, you can change how long attachments are stored on your iPhone by following the directions below.
Store messages
You can keep messages forever, for one year, or for 30 days. Pick a setting under Settings > Messages > Keep Messages. When messages are deleted after a set date, their attachments are also deleted.
