Q: Use Messages without SMS

I'm interested in using the Messages app on both the iPhone and the Mac as strictly an IM app, and not using SMS at all.  Is this possible?  How do I set it up?

Also, is it possible to set up the Messages app on the iPhone to be used both for SMS and for IM?

The reason I'm asking is because I have someone who does not have an iPhone but does have a Mac, and I want them to be able to use Messages to IM me.

Thanks.

iPhone 4S, iOS 9.1

    Hello David,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

I see that you're looking for some clarification with using Messages between a Mac and iOS device.  If your ultimate goal is to be able to use iMessage between your iPhone and someone using a Mac, then all you need to do is simply enable your Apple ID as an address, and have that person use the address to send messages.  Have the person using the Mac follow the directions in the link below to get started with iMessage on their Mac:

    Take care.
