Q: mail doesn't receive every message

Ever since upgrading to El Capitan, not all incoming mail is displayed in the message viewer. I have different mail clients and they all 'receive' all the messages properly. Restarting the apple mail client will sometimes display all the received messages and sometimes not. I've been on the 'taken care' of by two separate senior advisors and my case has been in engineering for a month. I created a new user on my mac and when I log into that profile, mail works properly so there is clearly a problem with my profile.

Apple's engineering has taken all this information and repeatedly asked for screen shots and activity logs, which I've given them. The support experience has been Microsoftian to say the least. Apple, what happened to you?

Does anyone else have this problem, either with their mail or with Apple's terrible fall from grace?

    Hi Linc,

    Here you go.

In the meanwhile I'm creating a USB installer unless you have some insights. I think you'll find this set of apps much more acceptable.

You got rid of a lot of junk, but not "MailHub" or "MailSteward," which are still installed in your home folder and probably still sabotaging Mail. Because they are in the home folder, they were restored from the backup. You must follow the developers' instructions to remove them.

You also managed to install the "Spigot" malware, which wasn't there before. That means you weren't careful enough about where you downloaded something else. Take the steps below to disable it.

Malware is always changing to get around the defenses against it. This procedure works as of now, as far as I know. It may not work in the future. Anyone finding this comment a few days or more after it was posted should look for a more recent discussion, or start a new one.

Back up all data before continuing.

    1. Triple-click the line below on this page to select it, then copy the text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:

    ~/Library/LaunchAgents

    In the Finder, select

              Go Go to Folder...

from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You may not see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return. A folder named "LaunchAgents" will open.

    2. Inside the folder you just opened, there may be one or more files with a name beginning as follows:

               com.spigot

Move all such items to the Trash.

Log out or restart the computer. The trojan will now be inactive, but there are a few more components of it that should be cleaned up.

    3. Do as in Step 1 with this line:

    ~/Library/Application Support

    and remove an item named

                Spigot

    If it's present.

    Empty the Trash.

    4. From the Safari menu bar, select

              Safari Preferences... Extensions

Uninstall all extensions you don't know you need, including any with the word "Spigot" in the description. If in doubt, remove all of them. None is required for normal operation. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those.

Make sure you don't repeat the mistake that led you to install the malware. Chances are you got it from an Internet cesspit such as "MacUpdate," "Softonic," "CNET Download," or "SourceForge." Never visit any of those sites again. You might also have downloaded it from an ad in a page on some other site. The ad would probably have included a large green button labeled "Download" or "Download Now" in white letters. The button is designed to confuse people who intend to download something else on the same page. If you ever download a file that isn't obviously what you expected, delete it immediately.

In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.

Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked

Install system data files and security updates (OS X 10.10 or later)

    or

Download updates automatically (OS X 10.9 or earlier)

    if it's not already checked.

Spigot? You've got to be kidding me. You're right, I tried downloading GIMP from sourceforge because Pixelmator (gotten from the app store) was crashing constantly and I need to get a file out. I can't believe mail hub is still in my system because I downloaded so long ago. I thought I had deleted it (the app was lame and didn't work). Mail steward is absolutely a mystery why that would be in my home folder. In any case, I just wiped out the hard drive again and did a clean install without migrating anything over. This is a brand new profile. I have backups of everything so I can bring it all back as needed. Here is the latest system report...

I'm going to have to be much more vigilant.

Can you still reproduce the problem?

Not so far. The computer certainly seems peppier. I'm still installing software but mail seems to be behaving. I would actually be surprised if the problem recurred because I really believe it was tied to my profile.

Spoke to soon. I just noticed mail was not showing up. In this case it was a peculiar behavior. I usually am on the global inbox so I can see all my accounts, and new mail did not show up. I clicked on each individual inbox and the mail was there. I then clicked on the global and it was not there. Restarting mail seemed to have reset everything properly.

    Any ideas?
