Q: Can't format drive after Bootcamp

Hello guys. As many others before me I tried to create a Windows partition on my iMac and install a windows os via Bootcamp. Didn't work. Also, after that I have a "Microsoft Reserved" partition that I can't erase and all kind of mess with other partitions. Did a clean install of Yosemite but it didn't help.

I have an install usb stick the Yosemite installer on it and the Mac I have is: iMac (27-inch, Late 2012) 3TB Fusion drive

I ran this command with Terminal: diskutil list

Here's the result:

chriss-iMac:~ chris$ diskutil list

I am trying to just completely format the internal drive and create back the fusion drive with 1 Macintosh HD drive visible on desktop.

You are my only hope

Many thanks,

    1. Please post the output of

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk1

    2. What was done to the Bootcamp partition?

    3. A MSR partition shows up when an EFI boot is attempted and the Windows Installer starts, but is unable to format/find a FAT partition to install Windows.

    4. What is the version of Windows you are trying to install?

I was trying to install Windows 8 but now I just want to get back to the basic Macintosh HD and that's it. Bootcamp partition was erased with disk utility as I didn't have the option to do it with the Bootcamp installer.

DU does not understand BCA partitioning.

The simplest and safest solution is to backup OSX, boot into Internet Recovery, erase your internal Fusion drive, and restore from backup. Time Machine will usually makes this painless.

Ok, can't use Time Machine because I don't have any external drive with me atm. Can I do a clean install from a usb though? I made an Yosemite installer.

I don't know how to erase the ssd and the rest via Terminal either - when I tried with the Disk Utility it didn't work. Many thanks for the help sir!

    1. Do you have a backup of OSX? Any external disk connected directly to the Mac can be used as a backup disk, provided it has enough disk space and is formatted properly.

    2. Are you able to boot in Internet Recovery?

    3. In Internet Recovery, Utilities -> Disk Utility will let you erase the entire disk.

I don't have a backup of the OSX but can make one - does it mea I need to install it on an external drive or just make a backup of my current system using Time Machine?

I'm able to boot in Internet Recovery.

    What should I do then?

    Many thanks!

*Update: Can't erase "disk1s6" and "Untitled" and there is around 1TB missing somewhere. I'm in Internet Recovery and using Utility Disk. Attached is a photo of how it looks like.

Unless you have an OSX backup of all your files, I would not recommend erasing any drives.

Yes, I did a backup of everything before even trying to use Bootcamp so no worries. Now I'm just trying to wipe out clean the entire drive and make a clean install of Yosemite. I managed to get a Macintosh HD, DU also shows a disk 1s4 partition (Logical Volume Group) 314.6MB and a free space - I can't erase this Free space partition.

    Start Utilities -> Terminal.

    1. Erase Macintosh HD volume - diskutil cs eraseVolume E6F8D0D9-4777-4619-BF8A-51C7ED6532D3.

    2. Erase Macintosh HD volume group - diskutil cs delete 17280591-2E9B-43A1-99A1-B7F2557A0436

    3. Erase underlying SSD - diskutil eraseDisk jhfs+ SSD disk0

    4. Erase underlying HDD - diskutil eraseDisk jhfs+ HDD disk1

    5. Create a new LVG (the SSD must be first) - diskutil cs create OSX-MacintoshLVG disk0s2 disk1s2

    6. Step 5 will generate a new UUID (long string).

    7. Create a new LV - diskutil cs createVolume LongStringFromStep5 jhfs+ "Macintosh HD" 100%

    8. Restore from TM backup.

    Please try

    diskutil cs deleteVolume E6F8D0D9-4777-4619-BF8A-51C7ED6532D3.

(So much for deleteVolume and eraseVolume naming consistency).
