Q: imac 27 black screen

Hello,

I've bought my imac in december 2011 :

- imac 27 mid-2011

- 2,7 Ghz intel core i5

- AMD radeon 6770M

Everything went perfect until september 2014, i was working on a montage movie for my friend's wedding when the screen suddenly went black.

I restart the system few minutes later and finish my work without problems.

From september 2014, it's getting worst and worst and now most of the time i don't see the login screen. If i put a flash light in front of the screen, i can see that the screen is on but unfortunately dark.

I have called few times apple support who try to help me even if my guarantee was over. We try to reboot SMC, PRAM but the problem is still there.

Hard for me to diagnose the problem, i would like to get help if someone encounter this problem too and what i can do to use my mac again.

Thank you for your help.

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), OS X Mavericks (10.9)

Several days ago it started happening to me. I read everything I could find ... one thread was 17 pages long. The best I could do was run it at 20% brightness. If I got bold and tried to nudge it a bit higher ... <POOF> ...

But, just as a wild guess and maybe in frustration I jammed (in one nanosecond) that *!&*^#% screen brightness slider (not the brightness button on the keyboard) to full 100% brightness. And nothing happened! It stayed on, and that was several days ago. The next day I tentatively lowered it to about 80% (where it had been set for a couple of years) ... and all is well so far. Try it. Nothing to lose.

    Thank you for your answer.

But I don't know where to find the screen brightness slider. Could you please tell me what is it?

    Thank you.

    Bonjour Gaeton,

    Certainment!

Go to the "Applications" icon at the bottom of the screen ... a pale blue file-folder with the letter A on it.

    Go to (click) "System Preferences".

    Click on the "Displays" symbol.

Et la voila! There is the brightness control/slider. In one very quick smooth motion (aussi vite que possible) move it all the way to the right ... to 100% brightness.

It worked for me, and I hope it works for you. In a day or two I lowered it to about 80%.

I also went to the Energy Saver symbol (also in the "System Preferences" section), and set the "display sleep" arrow to Never.

No guarantee, but it worked for me! Good luck!

    Gaetan,

So, I am really curious ... did it work out OK for you?

    Thanks again for your answer.

I tried yesterday and it seems to work (but it was a long time since I turn on my imac). I use for 30 min without black screen which is already a good point.

I will use my imac again tonight, I let you know how it happens... I cross fingers!

    Gaetan

Is your big iMac still working with my little "fix"?

After 3 months, it happens again unfortunately...

I didn't use my imac a lot. I tried to turn down the brightness to about 70% and it happens again twice...

Now I let light settings on 100% brightness and hope it won't happen but I'm not very confident with my imac. I never know if I all be able to use for a long time or not and also cannot update my system if this happens.

I'm forced to use it less and less.

Do you have other REX on this case?

    Thx for your answer.
