Q: restore the icon used for zipped files archive utility

When I zip or download a zipped file, Archive Utility doesn't display it's default zip icon anymore. Also not when viewing Info and the large Previewer icon. It now displays this version of a program I seem to have installed (don't know which). How can I turn it back to Archive Utility's default blue zip icon van I compress or download a zipped file? I've tried everything from changing the Get Info icon to going to Core Services (where nothing has changed in the icns files or Archive Utility)

    Hello there, Jiggy.

It sounds like you want to change the application that launches when opening zipped files on your Mac.  The following Knowledge Base article offers up the steps on how to accomplish that in Yosemite:

OS X Yosemite: Choose an app to open a file

You can select which app you use to open a file. This is useful if you prefer to use a certain app, or if you don’t have the app that was used to create the file.

Open a file once with a specific app

    Do one of the following:

Drag the file onto the app icon in the Finder or the Dock

Select the document in the Finder, then choose File > Open With.

Control-click the document, then choose Open With.

Open the app, then choose File > Open.

Permanently change the app used to open a document

    1. In the Finder, select the document, then choose File > Get Info.

You can also Control-click the document, then choose Get Info.

    2. In the Info window, click the disclosure triangle next to “Open with.”

    3. Click the pop-up menu, then choose the app.

To open all documents of this file type with this app, click Change All.

If you can’t open a file with a specific app, the file may be damaged or may not be recognized by that app. Try opening it with a different app.

Alternatively, if all you need to do is change the icon for the file itself, this article should help:

OS X Yosemite: Create custom icons for files or folders

You can create a custom icon for any file or folder using your own pictures, icons downloaded from the web, or the icon from another file or folder.

Use your own picture or a picture from the web

    1. Copy the picture you want to use to the Clipboard.

One way to do this is to open the picture in Preview, choose Edit > Select All, then choose Edit > Copy.

    2. Select the file or folder whose icon you want to replace, then choose File > Get Info.

    3. At the top of the Info window, click the picture of the icon, then choose Edit > Paste.

Use an icon from another file or folder

    1. Select the file or folder whose icon you want to use, then choose File > Get Info.

    2. At the top of the Info window, click the icon, then choose Edit > Copy.

    3. Select the other file or or folder, then choose File > Get Info.

    4. Click the icon, then choose Edit > Paste.

Restore the original icon for an item

    1. Select the file or folder, then choose File > Get Info.

    2. At the top of the Info window, select the custom icon, then choose Edit > Cut.

Didn't help. No matter what app I set it to and how many times I restore it to Archive Utility, that large zip image in the preview section stays the same.

You might want to start your own post since this one is from last year. A new post would be much more visible. You can link to this one.
