Q: Safari 9.0.1 does not open in Mac OS 10.9.5

Hi,

after installing the latest version of Safari (9.0.1) through the Apple Store, Safari will not open, at all. Instead I receive an error message that says something like (translating from spanish):

"Safari could not open due to a problem.

Contact the developer and make sure Safari is compatible with your version of OS X. The application might require to be re-installed."

I have the latest version of Mavericks installed (10.9.5) and I also installed all latest security updates. Safari 9.0 was running perfectly fine (still is in my laptop with same OS version). I re-started the computer a few times, same problem. I re-started in secure mode and same problem. I manually erased the Extensions from the Library, same problem.

Did anyone have the issue? Given that the issue is with Safari, I expect it to be compatible with OS 10.9.5, otherwise it would not have been listed in my updates in the Apple Store. How could I try to re-install Safari 9.0.1 from the Apple Store? Or, how to re-install Safari 9.0 that was correctly working?

Best.

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012), OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

    Hi there Arkog,

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities.

If I understand correctly, there's an issue with Safari not launching as expected on your iMac. If you haven't already, take a look at the article linked below and try the troubleshooting tips that it provides:

If Safari is slow, stops responding, quits unexpectedly, or has other issues - Apple Support

If the issue persists, this article will walk you through the process of reinstalling Safari and OS X.

Get the latest version of Safari for your Mac - Apple Support

    Ciao.

    Hi Jason,

thanks for the effort. In relation to the first link you send, Safari will not open at all so I cannot access Safari's preferences pane to dissable the extensions. I manually removed the extensions from ~/Library/Safari/Extensions but it has no effect. Interestingly, the ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins folder is empty, so nothing to be reomoved from there. I think that is weird because I use other browsers too and Plug-ins are working, unless they install the plug-ins independently.

In respect to the second help guide the problem is, I already updated Safari to its latest version 9.0.1 so for the App Store app, the latest Safari is already installed. If Safari were a purchased program that would not be a problem because you can always re-download and re-install the app from the "Purchased" tag. However, as Safari is part of the OS the App Store does not allow to re-download and re-install OS components nor its updates. I love the idea of the App Store but its functionality is too limited. It does not allow to re-install critical pieces, nor to revert to previous versions. It neither allows you access to the repository with all the current and previous versions.

I have a developer account. Do you know if I can access such a repository in the developer area to re-download and re-install Safari from scratch?

Otherwise, I guess that my only solution for now is to wait until the next update (Safari 9.0.2) appears in the App Store and cross fingers that it will work.

    Best.

    Hi Eric,

thanks for the link. I followed the steps in that post but…  really nothing. Safari will not even get started. I noticed that the self-generated crash report starts like with the following:

    –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– ––––

It says "version: ???" So, maybe something went wrong during the installation of the update to Safari 9.0.1 and it was not completed. That is why I think I would need to re-install Safari from scratch. But in the era of the App Store, there is no recovery disk and no way to find an original installer file anywhere.

    Best.

You are welcome. Since Safari is part of the OS, you need to reinstall the OS.

Do a backup, preferable 2 separate ones on 2 drives. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option/alt key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair Disk and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then re-install the OS.

Actually, as I was hoping the update to Safari 9.0.2, released on 08.12.2015 solved the problem. I didn't need to re-install everything from scratch (phew!).

    Thanks for your help guys.
