Q: Why wont my Final Cut Pro 7 projects open in FCPX?

Hi there,

I recently had my laptop completely stop working after spilling a glass of water on it (actually my dog spilt the water, groan). I now have a new laptop - 2015 macbook Pro 13inch pro retina. I have all my Final Cut Pro / video files stored on an external hard drive. When I plugged the hard drive in, my FCP saved projects where not visible at all (just exported .movs etc). Ive now just downloaded the 30 day trial of FCPX (as I'm not sure whether, seeing as I have to now upgrade from FCP7 anyway, to go FCP or premiere).

When I try to open my projects in the trial version of FCPX i get a dialogue box saying 'final cut pro cannot open files of this type'.

I have all my work in FCP7 projects and cannot afford to simply loose the ability to go back in for re-edit / exports if and when necessary. Is it possible to transfer projects between versions at all? I would have thought that both being FCP there would surely be some leeway, otherwise whole archives of previous work would need to be completely redone, should any changes in the project need to occur at a later date?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
