Q: Macbook Air Logic Board Failure

So here's my story: I bought a few months used Macbook Air Mid-2013 11" (A1465) last spring. It was big money for me, but I was hoping that atleast it would be a reliable tool for many years (basing on the Apple reliability reputation). Going almost a year without issues, last week happened this. I was studying late, and when I went to bed, the battery was almost empty (~5%). I just put it to sleep. When I woke up the next morning, the Macbook had ran out of power, and when I tried to charge it, it didn't do anything. I googled it, and tried many things, like SMC reset and warming the charger. I even tried a different charger, but nothing.

So I took the Air to a authorised Apple reseller (Valge Klaar) in Estonia for diagnostics. And yesterday I got a text from them that the logic board is dead, and the replacement would cost 480€ (570$). I mean, how is this even possible that a mother board just randombly dies? Especially on a great reputation company device...

I was stunned by these news. So here I am now, and because I can only dream about paying that sort of money right now (or in the near future), helpless and hoping for some kind of help from you guys. The laptop is over a year old, so the guarantee is over by a month or two. Should I just sell it for replacement parts? I must admit I am quite disappointed in Apple

I also had a problem with Mac Book Air Early 2011.  My problem was with the wireless internet connection.  I took it to the Genius Bar, also spent hours on the pphone with Apple Care people without being able to resolve the problem of having the internet connection get slower and slower until it timed out.  Very frustration   I also reset the Pram, etc.  The computer would work fine for a day or so then the same problem would re-occur.  Finally, the person at the Genius Bar ( thrid time around) said they would have to send the computer to Apple because as far as they were concerned it worked fine in their store.  Today I picked it up and much to my surprise I find I have a received a new Logic Board, along with new wireless cables which were defective and  new Wireless Card.  Guess my computer really did have a problem after all.  I am so glad I had purchased the Apple Care extended wuarantee so there was no charge. I had no idea this was an ongoing problem with these machines.  I agree that Apple should step up and recall these machines or at least fix the problem when it occurs at no cost.

    Probably dreaming on that one.

Glad to have my machine back and fingers are crossed that this fix lasts.

Same issue with MBA a1466. A logic board failure.

I shutdown MBA, halfway through the process then screen went blank and I was unable to turn it back on. It had more than 50% charge at the time.

I Own an apple orchard in my house, a couple of iMacs, couple 6+s, 4 iPads, 3 iPods, appletv2, and, a shuffle with no problems with an other products.

I have never had any problems previously and it seems obvious from the amount of people affected by this logic board issue with MBA's that a thorough investigation or a QA analysis needs to be conducted as a 2 year life is just not acceptable.

Very disappointed with my current issue and a major inconvenience.

My logic board just failed while trying to restart during the El Capitan update. I purchased my 13" MacBook Air in August 2013. Genius bar says my only option is to pay for a new one At half the cost of the original machine. Im beyond disappointed in Apple.

They say once you go mac you cant go back, but i stuck with my zombie macbook air which hardly works anymore.

Macbook Air Mid 2013 logic board failure C0*********5V7 , I have Apple Care till 2017 but they wont fix it as they say it was water damaged. The price quoted was around 36000.

Really disappointed as I never spilled any liquid on it and all damage was caused thanks to high humidity.

I advice all to better stay away from macbooks air if you travel and carry your work around. There are better options in the market which are more reliable.

Buy if you want a museum showpiece with least amount of utility which it poses to have then go ahead fanboy.

Need a 'official recall' or cheaper repair option from Apple cause 36000 is a big joke, you get refurbished macbook pros for that kind of money.

Have been a loyal apple customer for more than 15 years but this cheap quality and bad service really disappoints me.

Daughter has a macbook air (mid 2014), complained the battery is not charging. Followed instructions for diagnosis, reset etc, still battery not recognzied. Took it to Genius Bar after a rather precise appointment time of 4:45, after waiting for 40 minutes at the bar completely ignored, finally was paid attention to.

He ran diagnosis again, with the same results, battery not recognized. He took it inside to see if it is a battery failure or Logic Board, came back

saying he needs to remove the battery and see if this is battery or logic board.Need to leave the macbook in the shop for 3-5 days for isolating the failure. Made me sign a repair contract. I complained that the product is just over a year old. But he says he asked his manager and cannot do anything.

How can a product that costs 1300 dollars go bad in  just over 1 year?. Really disappointed with Apple. Would be the last product I buy from Apple that is for sure.

Same issue for me here. I bought the MBA last year and it's a 2014 model.

Really dissapointed with apple. This was my first laptop and its dies just after the warranty gets over.

THe repcement of the logic board costs 2/3 the price of the laptop! ********.

Looking at the number of complaints here, there seems to be a widespread issue!

    God Bless!

Is the company pay any attention!

Same issue here. Wife's MacBook Air purchased directly from Apple in May 2014. About six months out from the basic warranty, the laptop won't turn on. Took it to a local Apple affiliate who says that the logic board is bad. They're going to send it to Apple for repair at about a cost of $500. With the number of others who have this same issue, its a shame that a company with the reputation of Apple won't offer a free replacement of such an expensive logic board after 18 months of use. No way I should have had to buy the extended AppleCare warranty to cover this kind of essential component.

I've been an Apple user for 20 years. I hate to think that I'll have to reconsider that.

Another MBA logic board failure.  Bought MBA Sept 2014, October 2015 MBA starts acting up and powering off by itself.  Eventually it turned off and never turned back on.  Brought to apple store, they said logic board is bad and needs to be replaced, 300 flat rate to fix it.

After reading all of the other issues in the thread, I'm ****** off at Apple.  Shame on you Apple.  Clearly there is an issue with the hardware if all these people are having issues.  Take some responsibility for your faulty products.

Have been a apple user for 10+ years and have always been an advocate of their product, this will be changing.

Quality seems to have dipped since Jobs.  My last MacBook Pro flew off the top of my car doing 40 mph and worked for 3 more years. Current MBA has never been dropped or damaged or anything and logic board fails..

    Another MBA Logic Board failure!!!

Bought a brand new MBA from Apple in late 2013, and since upgrading to El Capitan have had nothing but problems, have spoke to around 10 - 15 different "Senior Advisers" in a month but to very little help, several re-installs of El Capitan and Mavericks and still playing up!!

Finally was asked to run a diagnostic (hold D on start up) and fold there was an issue with my battery!

UPS where sent to collect my MBA and yesterday had a text from the people looking at it to tell me that a part had been ordered. Rung them up and it was the Logic Board.

Thank goodness I had bought Apple Care, so hopefully there will be no unwanted additional bills!

Apple seriously need to do something about this, I have had over a month of inconvenience, stress and severe work down time. and to be told every time I speak to Apple they say that they will get this sorted and they don't know what they would do if there Mac didn't work, don't rub salt in my wounds!!!

I have bought several iPhone's and iPad's and this is my first MBA, but after this issue I will not be buying another Apple product again.

Same story here. I had purchased my Mac Air last August and when I simply started the Mac Air it went dead. The service center seems to have tried all the tricks and also commented that the machine had be maitained well.  The service center has clearly written no damage or liquid dropping etc.

.the extract from their report is given below. The point to be noted is that they were not able give any reason why the issue has come..

No sign of physical damage or liquid damage on unit.

as per VMI iPhone MLB need to replace under exchange price. Post

replacement of MLB need to check further hardware.

Really disappointing on the quality side of the product. To be fair I have been using the Apple products and in fact Mac Mini from 2008 and second generation Ipods, and the iphones has been working really well..

But looking at the blog seeing so many seems to be having the same issue is really disappointing..Not sure what is Apple doing with such cases..

Early 2014 MBA internet was not connecting and getting message hardware not installed - few days after installing El capitan. I thought it was software issue. i took the laptop  to Computer b on Grafton Street (there is no apple store in Ireland and they are according to apple a premium retailer - more of this below) and they told me it was the airport card which was 180 euro. By the way, they charge you 69 for the diagnostic test alone.  After a few days without hearing from them, they contacted me  (after me ringing them to ask why my computer was not ready and they said it was the logic board which would be 680).   Ridiculous.

Laptop is out of warranty as I bought it in May 2014 so Apple said they cannot do anything. Nice apple guy on the phone but gave no solution.  They need to do a recall as there is a clear problem with the logic board which is a factory defect.

Given that this is clearly a design/hardware issues, apple should take responsibility.   In the future, I would also avoid compu b  in Ireland as the staff were clueless from the people receiving the equipment  (looking and acting unprofessional), to the technician (which could not tell what the problem is)  to the people I contacted on the phone to follow up on the repair service.   Furthermore, how am I sure that they did not break something themselves when trying to connect the airport card. I wish Apple could even look at this

    Hi people. Here to help.

I had the same issue. I purchased an early 2014 11 inch Macbook Air last September and guess what?

It went blank about 4 weeks ago. 3 weeks outside the years warranty. Took it to a premium Apple Seller recommended on the apple website (Not an Apple Store) and after a two week wait I get the news I have a 500 pounds/900 dollar repair bill due to a logic board fault. Gobsmacked and peeved off that my product was written off one year after purchase I spent a few hours calling around experts and the apple tech guys. I didn't actually buy the product from an Apple Store but a British firm called Curry's/PC world (I live in the UK right now) and all the experts told me to take it back there and claim on the 'sales of goods act' which is a law in the EU which means companies in the first two years are fully eligible to repair a faulty product they provided. It's actually six years however after the 2 years the company has some ways to fight it but not in the first two.

I rang the firm that supplied it and within 10 minutes they had accepted responsibility and have repaired by product for free. I'm not sure on consumer law in the States but if you've had the same issue and didn't buy it through an Apple Store then you must read into this. If you're an EU citizen then make sure you follow this up as you have a strong case. I'm sure Apple cover their backs with this somehow but other firms other than Apple are vulnerable to consumer rights. A logic board failure without damage is classed a manufacturers fault and you are able to claim in the EU.

Product wise it's almost laughable that an apple product practically dies after one year, it's poor from Apple that is for sure and had I not been able to get this repair for free you would have likely lost me as a customer even though I love apple products a failure so early and so expensive is indefensibile.

I hope I've saved some people some money, good luck to you all.

I've had the same problem. I could hear the fan whirring inside but with a black screen. Did all types of resets to now avail. I was able to get the battery to run down completely and get it started again but it didn't last long. And yes same think was told $700 for a new mother board.

This was a big purchase for me and my computer crapped out before the one year warranty. I"d never bought an extended warranty in my life and never had to a computer of seemingly lesser quality cease to function like this.

I WANT TO KNOW IF APPLE MONITORS ITS FORUMS!!!

Apple should take responsibility? It is not normal that a machine of this price becomes unusable after only 15 months.

No apparent reason obliging the consumer to pay $ 500? I intend to exercise my right of protection to consumers to justify the free repair. We are entitled to a minimum of normal use for a product of this value! A laptop should last much longer useful life.
