Q: Can I buy a movie with ATV 3 and take it to friend's house?

Can I buy and download a movie with Apple TV 3 at home

Then take it to a friends house and watch it there, or does it need to download it again? (using up more data)

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7)

Apple Tv 3rd Generation does not have an internal harddrive so you cant download anything in it. You can rent a movie on itunes and you can watch it with your iTunes store account. or you can mirror the movie from iphone, ipad or from a mac through airplay.

Use AirPlay to wirelessly stream content from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

    Thank you for your reply

I thought it was a bit "fishy" when I had to log into my iTunes account again. I would have gone way over my data allowance on my phone which would have cost many $$$

I understand you can download a movie into a Mac where it is permanently stored, is that correct?

    cheers

yeap. it is correct. You can do it via Airplay, if your Mac does not meet the requirement you can try via bluetooth by activating HomeSharing

    Requirements for using AirPlay

If you go to Apple menu > System Preferences, click Displays, and don't see the option to "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available," your Mac doesn't meet these requirements.

Minimum requirements if your Mac and Apple TV are on the same network:

Apple TV (2nd generation or later) with the latest Apple TV software

For mirroring your display or extending your desktop, any of the following Mac computers with OS X Mountain Lion v10.8 or later:

    iMac (Mid 2011 or later)

Mac mini (Mid 2011 or later)

    MacBook (Early 2015 or later)

MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or later)

MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or later)

Mac Pro (Late 2013 or later)

Minimum requirements for peer-to-peer AirPlay, which lets visitors quickly and easily connect their Mac or iOS device to your Apple TV without gaining passwords and connecting to the Wi-Fi network:

Apple TV (3rd generation rev A, model A1469 or later) with the latest Apple TV software

A Mac (2012 or later) with OS X Yosemite v10.10 or later
