Q: rMBP 2015 Wake Reason: ARPT (Network)

I can't seem to find out what is waking my Mac up so much. Battery life on standby is terrible. Snippet from running "syslog | grep -i "Wake reason"" through Terminal:

Can't seem to find out the issue via Google. I have extensively searched.

Appreciate any help.

P.S. this is a duplicate from rMBP 2015 10.10.3 Wake Reason: ARPT (Network). I do not know how it ended up in the OS X Mavericks section because I clearly remembered choosing Yosemite from the dropdown list. Anyhow, that one is closed and I would appreciate any help I can get from this section of the forum.

Thanks.

In command "pmset -g log" 's output, I found that _mDNSResponder wakes up my MacBook every 10 minutes or so as long as Wi-Fi network is connected. I think this problem is some what related to other Apple products like Apple TV/Watch, iPhone and iTunes running on windows because whenever I put my MacBook to a separated network environment, the _mDNSResponder logs are gone and my MacBook sleeps nicely.

Currently my workaround is to use sleepwatcher to turn off Wi-Fi network when MacBook is going to sleep. You can either install it with homebrew, if you are familiar with it, or visit http://www.bernhard-baehr.de/ fo installation guide and manual. To turnoff Wi-Fi, just use this command:

      /usr/sbin/networksetup setairportpower en0 off

    Hope this may help.

    Okay, that's good news!

I'll give it a test. I have been relying on turning wifi off for so long that I didn't notice the problem is already fixed.

How about the original wake reason ARPT? As far as I know this is the first observed wake reason concerning this discussion.

You can use pmset commanline utility to figure out whats waking your macbook up. Here's how:

    1. Open up terminal (spotlight search terminal)

    2. input:

            pmset -g log

    3. Hit enter

    4. Scroll up to find the latest "Lid Open" line, then read carefully in order to find what's inserting assertion to prevent sleep event or firing waking requests.

Thanks for your input. I use another command to check wake reasons though. One recent interesting found was that, during midnight to 7am, my mac would only wake for RTC(it's ok), after that, it would constantly be waken by stuff related to wifi. Here are my log.

Wow that one is new.. haha sorry dude!  Scan offload, RT  alarm,  and tcp timeout are supposedly normal. I would look into the HID ATC.

This looks familiar to me. Syslog cannot provide much information about processes, services and system assertions that related to power management.  I suggest you use pmset instead for it can provide detailed infomation, like this:

Pay attention to line 3 (mDNSResponder:maintenance) This appears every time when my MacBook connects to my domestic Wi-Fi. Further more, I can find a corresponding "wake on TCP Data" or "TCP timeout" line in syslog. I'd like to give you some example of the very pmset log however I can't find it in my recent pmset logs nor syslog, sorry.

(first post here, so I just replied on the last comment. I hope this is the correct way (not replying on the OP))

I've the same problem. I've described my problem here: http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/217433/macbook-pro-continuously-wakes-u p-while-in-sleep-mode

In sleep mode, I've about 12% of battery loss (sleep mode for 9 hours) and my macbook keeps getting awake every couple of minutes. Below is my wake reason log from last night:

Please note that I've disabled any feature regarding sharing, powernaps, and wake for network access.
The above logs were obtained after I did a clean restart of my macbook pro and then I've let the macbook sleep.

the macbook is a rMBP 2015 (15") running OSX 10.11.1

    Welcome joining the discussion.

If you have access to your MacBook right now, I suggest you open Terminal.app, type in:

    pmset -g log

then return, scroll all the way up and find the corresponding log and paste it here. This may help to judge what process(es) requested DarkWakes. If in doubt, I have explained why we should use information from pmset rather than syslog in my previous posts.

I'll read the entire topic again this evening, but for now: below is a part of the output from the "pmset -g log" command.

Just like i thought, the keyword here is mDNSResponder. I've tried different network environments and found that maybe it's related to router configuration, or more specifically, firewall configuration. If your router allowed Bonjour packets to travel through your network and you've got any device that responds to it (maybe responds are not necessary, I haven't tried to turn all my apple devices off or disconnected), the mDNSResponder sends a maintenance wake request to the kernal, where the DarkWake takes place, and it sleeps again.

I've tried different methods to disable this behavior of mDNSResponder, either on my MacBook and my router, but I can't figure out the exact reason caused the regular DarkWake. The methods including:

       - command: sudo defaults write /Library/Preferences/com.apple.mDNSResponder.plist NoMulticastAdvertisements -bool YES (no use)

       - configuring my router's firewall disabling MacBook's connectivity to other devices in the same network (meaningless to me, disables iTunes sharing)

       - kill the mDNSResponder process (which will make safari unable to connect to any website)

My workaround is to use sleepwatcher to turn Wi-Fi on and off automatically when MacBook goes into sleep mode and wakes up. If there's any method to turn off DarkWake (AFAIK only hackintosh has the ability to add kernel line before loading kernel image), I'd really like to try that.

PS: I also tried turning off all my AddressBook accounts and it turned out to be useless.

what command or script are you using with sleepwatcher to disable and reenable wifi automatically on sleep/wake?

    Hi,

       It's networksetup. Use

    man networksetup

to learn more about this utility.

    Here's my sleep script:

    #! /bin/bash

    echo `date` "Sleeping" >> /tmp/sleep.log
    /usr/sbin/networksetup setairportpower en0 off
    echo `date` `/usr/sbin/networksetup getairportpower en0` >> /tmp/sleep.log

    and wakeup script:

    #! /bin/bash

    echo `date` "Waking up" >> /tmp/sleep.log
    sleep 7
    /usr/sbin/networksetup setairportpower en0 on
    echo `date` `/usr/sbin/networksetup getairportpower en0` >> /tmp/sleep.log

Notice there is a ' sleep 7' line in wakeup script because I want it to wait until the system is fully waked up from a hibernate sleep. If not, there's a small chance that the system would freeze as soon as the script turned on wifi.

PS: in case you renamed or modified your Wi-Fi device name, use ifconfig to find out what device name it is. ( If your don't know what ifconfig is, just ignore this line.)

    Nice day.
