Applicationshi,
At no point do you say you have an iPhone.
This implies you have one:-
Issue didn't arise until after I updated to El Capitan from Yosemite.
On the iPhone > Settings >Messages > Send and Receive does the Number show up.
Is it greyed out (so you can't change it) ?
Is it ticked ? (It sometimes gets "Lost")
if it is not ticked turn the Messages App Off and then On again after a pause.
Allow the Number to verify again.
You may need to reset the Apple ID and SMS forwarding if you were using them.
This should generate the Pop ups on the Mac to say the iPhone is using the iPhone Number and the Apple ID.
