Q: El Capitan won't Boot after update

I installed  El Capitan and it was booting fine. Then I installed the latest update and after the restart, the Mac loads the Apple logo and then screen goes white and it just freezes there. I tried restarting holding shift to log into safe mode and it remains white. I've even held down command and R to get the recovery mode to load.  I see are the boot options but when I select one, I just goes into a white screen.

I always worry that Apple does not know what is going on with a new piece of software. BUT, I did notice that the El Capitan software update  has a 2.5 rating on the Apple App Store site.... I hope that alerts them to something...when their own operating system is rated 2.5 something might be amiss!!!

Why? I've never logged in anywhere to rate something I like. It's not worth my time. That's why looking at a review rating is pointless. Angry people are pretty much the only ones that bother. I assume all the positive reviews are paid.

I can't believe Apple is still not responding to the problems. After several weeks I fixed my issue deleting the Eltima.kext, a problem I could never have solved without the help of this community. Really unbelievable, I have always considered the Apple support very crappy, but this worse than anything I have seen before.

So, the problem was caused by Eltima, yet you blame Apple? Truly odd rationalization.

Next, I have several virus and malware detection apps.  Dr. Web, ClamXvs.  I run these diagnostics every couple of days.  I also keep very tight control over cookies and databases being created by my three browsers, Safari, Chrome and Firefox.  And I use Drive Genius to monitor the condition of my drive.  In other words I my machine as pristine as I can.  In reviewing the logs, I can see no issues detected by any of these diagnostics in the days leading up to the boot failure.

Two pieces of useless crapware and you consider your system "pristine?"

    Hi Jan

Good to know you've conquered el capitan and have it running without problems.  I will upgrade once I gather the necessary fixes are in place....although I may give it a crack since I deleted Eltima.kext.  You reckoned you got rid of other .kext files - but I've no idea which ones is pretty individual?

At the moment I'm still holding my breath when I press the power button:/  Not the only one judging by many of the above

    All the best:) Chris

Ok, so my adventure began about 3 days ago. I had been running El Capitan on my Late 2012 iMac fine for a while. Last thing I remember installing was OneDrive from the App Store.

That afternoon while watching some Netflix I was greeted with constant popups mentioning that my keychain could not be found/accessed, but i ignored and postponed a restart. When I got around to the restart the whole system hung.

After I booted, BAM! I was greeted with this issue. The boot progress bar would not go more that half way.

After trying countless other things, I did the following and it finally booted:

Hey I ran across this fix and it worked for me on two machines.

Email this code to yourself, but change the machine name to YOUR EXACT(!) HardDisk-name.

    • cd "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/Library/Extensions/" ; mkdir Unsupported ; mv Net* Unsupported ; mv Sym* Unsupported ; mv hp* Unsupported ; mv ndc* Unsupported ; cd "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/System/Library/Extensions/" ; mkdir Unsupported ; mv Belc* Unsupported ; mv Eltima* Unsupported ; mv hp* Unsupported ; mv Hua* Unsupported ; mv Netg* Unsupported ; mv Remo* Unsupported ; mv RIM* Unsupported ; mv USBEx* Unsupported ; rm -Rf /Volumes/Macintosh HD/Library/Filesystems/*fuse* ; rm -Rf /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/Library/Application\ Support/Sym* ; rm -Rf /Volumes/Macintosh\ HD/var/folders/*

    Boot in Restore mode.

Click OS help and Safari will open

Open your email and copy the code

Quit Safari and open Terminal from the top menu

Paste the code and hit return.

Give it a minute or two. When it is done you will then be able to quit Terminal.

Restart. Be patient, restart does not begin immediately, and in 20-30 seconds

    Thanks Rus!

I didn't notice if there were Eltima or macFuse kext files (don't use their software) but the above code removed the culprit.

I saved what files I could and did a fresh install, but now the finder freezes occasionally and I also receive finder error 36 - Not sure what is going on there. The systems feels very flaky, like it could happen again. My heart skips a beat with every boot, restart, software install. Every time I see the beach ball it shaves 5 years off my life.

There is nothing that Apple did to break it. It's third-party crapware that you have to install yourself that causes the problem.

I think this is a new workaround to the hung update problem.

Late 2009 iMac, already running El Capitan for a couple of months.  Did the update to 10.11.1, and it gets stuck on the light grey screen with the moveable cursor.   It sounds like the machine is running, occasional disk noise, but no way to get past the blank screen.

Tried many of the suggestions in this thread (thanks!) but nothing worked.  Then someone mentioned ssh'ing to the machine and I get an idea.

I did have File Sharing and Screen Sharing turned on on the iMac.  So from Finder on another Mac I was able to

    • click on the hung iMac in the Shared section of the Finder sidebar
    • click on the Share Screen... button
    • wait a couple of seconds and see the login screen for the iMac (on the second mac)
    • type my password (on the second mac)
    • see the pinwheel spin on BOTH macs
    • see the iMac popup a "Completing installation... 11 minutes remaining" window on its screen
    • wait for this to complete
    • and the iMac was back to usable

No idea why this would work, but if screen sharing is enabled and you have another mac around this might help you.

Boot issues continue on 10.10. I've decide to pronounce MacDeath on my machine.

    Requiem for a dead machine:

May the armies of salvation give this machine a new life.

It's creators have rendered it a useless corpse, as if with a knife.

I'll be looking out with a different view as the arrow moves on.

All that's left is the worn, this apple's gone!

    BTW. Happy Thanksgiving

APologies....it is rendered unreadable by this mini  - always starts with two   case letters, won't respond in the text box when it try to correct.

so, I  recovered my mbpro to Yosemite - lost a day or so, small fry as it isn't work.

best of good luck to you

and happy thanksgiving - if you're in the USA

I posted a comment on the Apple store site concerning this problem.  I rated EC a one star.  I also wrote very frank opinion and described the problems we have been having.   I also said that I have dropped back to Yosemite.  Finally, I included my recommendation is to stay with Yosemite until something of significance happens to correct EC.

I've tried all the solutions and nothing worked. But when I disconnected my third monitor, everything worked fine. I'm not sure if it's a Viewsonic problem or having more than two monitors, but there wasn't a problem with Yosemite.
