Q: Apple TV 4th Generation Stops Airplay after Devices Lock

My brand new Apple TV 4th generation stops Airplay (Should it be YouTube Video, Music, anything ... ) after any device locks which makes it to be a completely useless device.

I have tried everything and yet nothing works. The issue seems not to be Apple Tv, but iOS 9. Because when I lock the screen, it stops playing. With music, the trick is to hit Play button on the lock screen and I guess that is an acceptable workaround; but with YouTube video, there is no way around it because you cannot start resume a video on a locked device.

And please do not suggest me to turn off the auto lock feature because my device is being managed by a Profile and I cannot do that, besides the fact that keeping your iPhone screen just to AirPlay seems unreasonable.

iPhone 6s, iOS 9.1

This is not due to iOS9 nor the ATV 4 specifically. In the following article it notes "Some apps might stop AirPlay when you lock your device or put your device to sleep."

No that is not correct and I am not sure based on what facts you are saying that this is not an iOS 9 issue.

First of all, it is due to iOS 9, because this was not happening in iOS 8. Any iOS 8 device works just fine with AirPlay, should it be Apple Tv 3rd or 4th generation. Any iOS 9 device has this issue, should it be Apple TV 3rd or 4th generation.

In iOS 9, music applications such as iOS native Music, Spotify, Radio Javan, SoundCloud, they all stop when the screen is locked IF they are on AirPlay; you can hit the play button again on the lock screen and the music resumes, but that is not very smart and user friendly. If it is NOT on AirPlay, the same applications continue to play after iPhone locks.

Therefore it is definitely an iOS 9 issue with AirPlay.

And I have already reviewed any available information on Forums and on Apple's Knowledge base and there was not a single useful answer.

As strange as it sounds, the issue is resolved by turning off the Live Wallpaper in your iPhone.

    1. Go to Setting > Wallpaper > Choose a New Wallpaper

    2. Choose a Wallpaper from "Stills" section.

Being that the EXACT same issue was reported 5 years ago (on iOS 4.3 which I provided a link to) it would seem to confirm that it's not related to iOS9 Nor the ATV4 specifically...

No necessarily! It could have been that the issue was resolved in the previous years, but came back in iOS 9 (In this case a feature exclusively available in iOS 9 caused it). The reason I am so confident the issue is related to iOS 9 is that any device on iOS 9 fails to work with any ATV, while any device on any other iOS version works with ATV.

And it turned out to be related to Dynamic/Live background that is introduced with 3D Touch.

    Thank you for your help

Then perhaps you might explain why I'm unable to reproduce this if it's a problem with iOS 9. I have iOS 9

    I have already explained it.

If you turn on Live Lock Screen (Choose a Live Background for your Lock Screen), the issue is reproduced.

Different issues can have the same symptoms. In my case, the issue was related to Live Screen which is an iOS 9 phenomenon.

Yes and you already explained it before that too, that time it was iOS 9.

Shall we leave it there, this isn't really going anywhere.

Hi. I have this problem too since i updated my iPhone 6 plus to ios9. My girlfriend got this problem too, with iPhone 6. Before the update, we didn't have got problems with airplay. Videos and music played well while phone was locked. Now, we can't play videos if phone is locked, making Apple Tv useless. I talked by phone with apple service, and the only thing they can say is to restore my phone. And i think, all the users of iPhone 6 need to restore his device to use apple tv? its a shame. And didn't work. Please, can anyone tell what to do in our case?
