Q: iCloud Restore for iPhone 6s - Missing Messages/Recent Calls Missing

Day one my wife and I got our new iPhone 6s (with iOS 9.0).  We did an iCloud restore from our iPhone 5s with iOS 9.0.1 and it was successful bringing all our data including Messages and Recent Calls.  The phones were then updated to iOS 9.0.1.  Everything was working fine...

My phone had an issue which ended up getting me a replacement iPhone 6s (iOS 9.0).  From here I tried restoring from the past iPhone 6s (with iOS 9.0.1) iCloud restore.  Unfortunately, Messages and Recent Calls did not come over from the past iPhone 6s backup and I even tried various of the iPhone 6s time stamped backups.  I also updated the new iPhone 6s to 9.0.2 and still no difference with the restore.  It wasn't until I reverted back to my iPhone 5s backup (iOS 9.0.1) that it would bring the Messages and Recent Calls over.  Note that the inclusion of the Messages and Recent Calls is evident immediately after the initial restart from restore (when the phone starts downloading apps).  This has me worried going forth and here is why!

I've done a new backup and a little digging.  I've noticed that both my new backup for the iPhone 6s and wife's are both smaller than our iPhone 5s backup was.  Example for my device backups: iPhone 5s: 18 GB, iPhone 6s: 17.1 GB.  Note that this seems backwards as if there was any difference for whatever reason, I would imagine that it be on the larger resolution device.  Also, this difference in size would seem reasonable for not including Messages (includes messages, videos, audio, etc.) and Recent Calls.  There may even be other data that this did not bring over as I did not see it benefit in losing years of messages for a week of new data, i.e. I did not research the loss to the full extent.

Has anyone else experienced this issue recently with an iPhone 6s or maybe there is a known issue I just have not stumbled across.

ie. restored from 5s. got a 6s+, did an icloud restore, data came across perfectly, but the 6s+ had screen issues (uneven backlighting issue). got a replacement 6s+. did icloud restore. hmm. no messages, and i think im missing some contacts as well. not happy.

please let me know if anyone overcomes this..

    Just noticed another oddity:

The Health Data is being restored from the iCloud backup. Well, at least it's being downloaded. Unlike the iMessages (see my posting above), the Health Data doesn't get deleted again after some time. It stays on the iPhone, but isn't being displayed in the Healt App, or the Activity App for that matter.

My Apple Watch does continue to collect activity data, that data, however, isn't being transferred to the iPhone. So I assume that the old, half-restored Health and Activity Data from the iCloud backup somehow "block" out new data.

Next up in my testing procedure: backing up the iPhone 6s (as it is now) via iTunes, then restore from there and see, if Health and Activity work again as expected (without the data from the last months, unfortunately.

Same problem here - I have somehow missed this issue on all the tech blogs and got my iPhone 6s Plus replaced in store yesterday, got home and no messages or call data on restore.

The thing I am angry with is the store saw me backup with iCloud while I was there and said nothing....Why do they not tell people in store and warn them when they clearly know this is an issue.

Wasted an hour on the phone to tech support earlier who denied all knowledge of the problem and said it is the first time they've had it reported. Told them about numerous news reports and their online forums and they gave me the usual dialogue of not trusting forums. Apparently the case is with an engineer who will atempt to recover the data but doubtful anything will come of it. Never experienced so much terrible customer services in nearly 20 years of being a customer.

Going back to old fashioned iTunes backups, cancelling my iCloud plan and seeking a refund for the last few months it hasn't worked.

Same issue. New iPhone 6, everything was working great until it crashed and they gave me a replacement. Now on my new Phone there are no messages and a number of apps are having issues. I really am very annoyed with Apple, especially the fact that they are not taking ownership or even acknowledging it.

Phoned again about an hour ago to get a refund for the iCloud subscription I have been paying for.

They again denied the problem existed (lies), then told me it was my fault as iCloud doesn't back up anything other than Pages and Numbers documents (lies again) and then admited there is a problem and they can offer a gesture of goodwill. Unfortunately I won't know what the offer is until they get the engineers report back later this week.

The fact they are offering a gesture of goodwill makes me slightly worried this is a terminal problem and isn't fixable as surely they would have just said a fix is coming. I suggest everyone asks for a refund and it may speed them up!

The most frustrating part of this whole thing is that people at Apple have no idea what iCloud Backup does. Everyone I've spoken to has at first said that iCloud does not back up messages or healthkit data, but that is simply not true.

Right now, I'm waiting for iOS 9.2 Public Beta 5 to come out. If it doesn't contain a fix I'll email tcook. I'm not too upset about being without my data for a few days because sure, mistakes do happen - the thing that's really bothering me right now is that Apple has given no indication as to whether this data is gone forever or if we can expect it to be recovered.

Okay. Same problem here. And similar levels of frustration.

    Reiterating the key point:

Since this problem had been reported at least 7 weeks ago, is easily reproducible, and is easily avoided with an iTunes backup, the Apple Support and Apple Store teams should have warned customers about potential data loss with iCloud backups when replacing an iPhone 6S or restoring one.

While this may be a difficult problem to debug and fix, issues of data loss should be a huge priority for Apple considering that the primary function iCloud is backup.

And repeating the steps here just to confirm:

    1. Had an iCloud backup for an iPhone 6S. (That had been set up from an iCloud backup of an iPhone 5S).
    2. Had the iPhone 6S replaced at an Apple Store. (The original iPhone 6S was erased in the store before turning it in.)
    3. Set up the new iPhone 6S by restoring the most recent iCloud backup of the original iPhone 6S.
    4. During the set up, the screen froze at a white background with a black Apple logo. Power cycled the phone and continued the restore. Messages data was missing and many apps crash immediately on launch (such as 1Password).
    5. Waited for a day to see if the problem was transient or if the data was still streaming in. No such luck.

I've repeated this process several times to make sure it wasn't a spurious error. Inspecting the Settings seems to indicate that Messages data is on the phone. (Settings > Storage & iCloud Usage > Manage Storage > Messages).

Also hoping that iOS 9.2 will address the issue.

I received an AppleCare outreach call addressing this thread and to collect more information.  I think we finally are getting some traction and hopefully they can resolve this issue soon.

I'm having the same issue. iPhone 6S was stolen and I just received a replacement today. Messages did not restore from iCloud, many of the downloaded apps are corrupted in some way, much of the Apple App (HealthKit data for example) data was also not restored. No call history either. Very disappointed, phone feels almost non-functional without these basic services. Additionally, when I restart the phone all of my messaging data is erased, clearly a big problem. The messaging application appears to be having general performance issues on my devices as well such as not adhering to the notification settings (I get no notification when messages arrive although the settings are set otherwise).

I have been having this issue for almost a month now. I had a 6s which was replaced at the Apple Store and then restored from an iCloud backup. All of my messages are missing  as well as all of my app data, many contacts and all of my notes. The apps on my phone now keep crashing, I am not getting message alerts, and  my photos which were the only thing that did restore are now in reverse chronological order. I have an open case with Apple and still no resolution. After almost a month without all of my data and a buggy phone that can't even load apps, I am fed up! This is absolutely ridiculous that I have to be without a properly working phone for such a long time. I am highly disappointed in Apple and their product and customer service and will be spreading the word to everyone about it.
