Q: Sometimes there's no sound on notifications after iOS9 update

So I updated my iOS devices (iPhone 6Plus, iPad 4 and iPod Touch 5) with the new iOS 9 on 17th September and since then I have noticed a weird thing. For most of the apps such as whatsapp, viber, Facebook Messenger, Gmail and some games (for which I have set the notifications as active), there's no notification sound but still the notification comes up on the screen. This happens even with the native messaging app (whether I send a text or iMessage). When there's another notification from the same app, then notification plays the sound or at times the sound stutters for multiple notifications from same app (e.g.: whatsapp group texts).

So anyone else facing the same issues? Does anyone know a solution? I have tried restarting, restoring and updating my devices to iOS 9 again and the mute buttons on my iPhone and iPad weren't ON while facing the issues. The volume is at max level.

I guess its already time for Apple to release iOS 9.1 fixing the issues.

iOS devices that were updated:

iPhone 6Plus - 128GB

iPad 4 - 64GB

iPod Touch 5 - 16GB

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 9

i solved this (now running iOS 9.2 on my iPhone 4S) by resetting the network on my iPhone.

when doing this, first make sure "Do Not Disturb" is turned off - Settings > Do Not Disturb

Then reset the network on your iPhone - Settings > General > Reset > choose Reset Network Settings.

That's all I did and it returned all my Notification sounds etc.

    I hope this helps

My mistake, I'm running iOS 9.1. I thought there was an upgrade to 9.2 about a month ago :/

I've been having this issue as well - alarms not going off, no incoming text message alerts, no sound when starting Siri, etc) on both iOS 9.0.2 and 9.1.

EXTREMELY frustrating to say the least. I've been a long time Apple customer, repair tech, indie support tech, etc. and the number of 'little issues' that Apple is letting into the wild is becoming alarming. I used to be able to say how easy using a Mac or Apple device was, but these problems are beginning to eat away at my confidence in saying that.

While dglenn1's post above helped at least restore some of the Messages alerts, I still don't get the Siri sound or alerts for some other apps.

And, yes, I've checked everything indicated in this thread and anywhere else I could find possible help on the web.

SAme issue happens with my 6s. After a while I figure out that it is because i turned on: "Filter Unkown Senders" in Setting/Message.

    iOS 9.1.

SO just turn this off. It works with mine, hope it works for you too

I am having the same issues. The Apple store did a diagnostic check on the iPhone 6 speaker. It's working fine. I agree that it is a software issue. I did a complete reset using iTunes and a restore from backup. Still having the same issues. When it isn't working if I try to change a notification sound, it will change but just vibrates and won't play. If I turn the phone off and on it resolves the issue. Weird. Having another genius bar appointment won't solve the issue I think, neither will having a replacement handset. Gggrrrrrr.

If anyone has experience with the iOS 9.2 beta, we'd be curious whether that version clears up this issue. The fact that we have not seen any 9.2 users posting here makes me hopeful that the issue has been resolved.

I tried the 9.2 Beta yesterday and the problem still existed.

Today though my notification sounds in Facebook Messenger magically came back.

I had the phone set to silent as I was in a meeting and I got a bunch of facebook messages, I noticed that the vibration was back for those messages. (whereas part of the issue I was experiencing was no vibration as well as no sound)

When I got back to my desk I took the phone off silent and sent myself a message from a test facebook account, notification sound and vibration were back to normal again!

So whack your phone on silent and get a friend to send you a flood of messages and see if anything changes.

I think I have solved my problem. I have removed  whatsapp and it appears to be working perfectly. I'll continue to monitor it.

My iPhone 5 stopped notifying me a week ago, in a very similar way that has been described in this thread over and over.  It is very frustrating to say the least.  I was wondering though, if I go to Settings > Do Not Disturb >, and I go all the way to the bottom of the screen, it provides two options:

    Silence:

    1.  Always

    2. Only while iPhone is locked

I am not able to remove the check mark completely.  Either one or the other has to be left with a check mark.  I'm beginning to wonder if this is my phone's problem.  I don't want either option checked.

    Would appreciate a response.

I resolved the problem on my end. It was actually my fault because I had changed my yahoo PW and was getting mail but no sound alerts.... then I realized I had another yahoo app and once I went into it on the control panel and type in the new PW, I was able to then get alerts and sounds.

My problem is completely resolved. 2.5 days and no more problems. Rang Apple and told then how I have solved it and they are going to look into the whatsapp  application.

Unfortuneately, I'm afraid they will be looking in the wrong place. There are quite a few people here who feel that the issue is WhatsApp, yet ignore those who keep saying that they don't use that app. I don't use WhatsApp and still have this issue.

The other problem are those that feel they've fixed the issue by doing something that resets the phone. This issue has always been tricky because any reset or boot will seem to fix the issue. Unfortunately, it often returns.

After much testing, I think I may be able to replicate the issue. The problem is that Apple seems unwilling to take it seriously. If the next iOS doesn't fix it, I will be replacing my phone anyway.
