Q: duplicated photos library with PowerPhotos

Hello!

I just used "PowerPhotos" (http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/powerphotos/) "duplicate" function to transfer my Photos library so that I could move it from a case sensitive drive to a case insensitive drive.  This appears to have worked.

It looks like the "Masters" folder inside the package content of my Photos library has the same number of items and is the same size...  does that tell me that everything transferred correctly?

Further is there any other way to be really sure that I transferred all my photos over correctly?

(I made the mistake of moving my Photos library to a case sensitive drive a while ago, and then when I try to copy it back to a case insensitive drive the normal way it says that you can't do that at some point during the long copy because you have files with the same case insensitive name.  Then El Capitan stops the copy and deletes whatever has been partially copied. I have a huge photos library so finding the offending files was not possible.

Thanks so much!

the only way is to go through the library using Photos and verifying that everything is there

It is not a good idea to muck around inside the library package as any change no matter hpw small can corrupt the library and cause data loss and you can not tell anything by looking there

    Give this a try:

1 - make sure there are no hidden photos in either library.  Open them and unhide any that have been hidden.

2 - in each library go to the All Photos window and check to see how many items are listed in the upper right hand corner. They should match if all of the photos and videos were migrated.

3 - in each library go to the All Photos window, go to the bottom of the list of photos and add up the number of items

    Photos002.jpg

NOTE:  The "3 items" are audio files which Photos can import and play.

Again the total number should match in both libraries and in the other windows.

4 - open each library in PowerPhotos, click on the Photos icon, select all of the photos in the right window (Command+A) and begin to drag.  That will give you a red box with the number of the items in white. Again this should be the same for both libraries and the other methods:

This should give you a good idea if any photos were not migrated.

So everything checks out, except for method 4.

Well first of all my Photos library seems to be missing many thumbnail photos.  PowerPhotos didn't transfer those, and Photos seems to be re-creating them slowly over time somehow for the last day.  At first there were no thumbnails and all the photos were black until you clicked on them and saw the full size photo, now most of the thumbnail photos exist but some of them are still black.  Again clicking on the photo shows the actual image, so it's there at least...

Then for the PowerPhoto's method 4, I see the old library has 26853 pictures.  And the new library in the PowerPhoto's has 25176 pictures, substantially less.

In Photos though the old library has 26,853 things and the new library has 26,886 (this makes sense because I took a few photos that got imported into the new library).

Any idea what to make of the substantially smaller number of photo's showing up in method 4, using PowerPhotos?

i don't know why the discrepancy. Take some screenshots and ask the developer.  He's quite responsive to inquiries and may be able to help.  You can get his contact info at the PowerPhotos website.
