Q: still photos imported to imovie change to solid green

i'm using all the newest versions of iLife and Aperture (as of 11/13/13)... i use iMovie to make slideshows from my photography because i like the controls better than in Aperture or iPhoto... however, since upgrading to Mavericks and all of the new iWorks, iLife, Aperture on my Fall 2011 MBA, when i import still photos into iMovie to make a slideshow, they have a propensity to be rendered, at least in previews, as solid green images (think green screen)... i'm using jpeg images that have been exported to a separate file from my Aperture library, all using RGB color... there seems to be no rhyme or reason to which ones render incorrectly and which do not... sometimes the thumbnail image appears as the solid green, most of the time, though, it will appear as a standard thumbnail image, but show up green on the preview screen. I have not tried actually exporting the project as a quicktime movie to see what happens. I have tried closing and reopening imove after import, but that seems to make no difference.  if i delete the files and reimport, sometimes they will import correctly, but often they do not.

My iMovie files, as well as the exported jpg's are all located on my internal SSD. Is anyone else having this kind of thing happen?

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9)

As I said, I have a working project now.

Rather that looking for workarounds, we should all be giving Apple a hard time and get them to fix what should be a easy fix for them.  This problem has been present in far too many version of their products and its exactly this sort of simple problem that will get them further bad press.

I recommend that everyone with this problem post a bug report to Apple at : http://www.apple.com/feedback/imovie.html

I have reported this to Apple.

To expand on the problem further, it also effects pictures imported to Photos app taken from a iPhone 5 so this is unlikely a issue related to original format problems caused by other brands.  This is ridiculous as iMovie actually allows you to import the photo natively and then you cannot easily rename the file to use a workaround.

C'mon Apple, get this sorted, its embarrasing.

All who are still struggling w/ this.  I have been tooling around on this awhile as well, and do not see a clear pattern of cause; nevertheless massively frustrating.

one hack I have found (only one that works constantly for me) is to save single image as slideshow and re import image as MPEG4.  this is an insane amount of extra work for a product that markets itself as a drag-and-drop solution - but 18 months in to this bug, that's where we are.

I as well have reported it... hope for the best.  Apple should either fix it, or allow access to last stable version

this is what worked for me... this was working fine before... this is for my son's still movies, up to this point all was just working... Anyways... I imported pics to Photos and then exported it as pictures to a destination of your choice, renaming the photos to the album plus the numbering... original name: 13433134.jpg, renamed to "AlbumName001" and then imported the files to my project on iMovie and all worked fine... No more green pics... Apple needs to fix it...

I have found a solution to this, however I'm not sure if it will work all the time or even work with other people. But I changed the extension name to a png and it works, instead of using a jpg. I am using iMovie 10.1, for my YouTube Channel, The Young Car Spotter. I hope this helps!

    Specs of my Mac:

    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011)

    Processor: 2.4GHz Intel Core i5

    Memory: 10GB 1333MHz DDR3

Hardrive: 256 GB Solid State SATA Drive

Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB

    With a 27-inch Thunderbolt Monitor

This is not an iMovie problem, but rather your graphics card.

I tried everything yesterday - changing extensions, renaming, re-importing media fresh from iPhone directly into iMovie bypassing Lightroom etc. - nothing helped. So I gave up on iMovie and installed Final Cut Pro - same problem with green images.

My MacBook Air just can not handle a large project like the one I was trying to put together, as I've never had this problem before with any smaller projects. It may be what's causing the issue for you as well. (Resizing all images to make them smaller might be a workaround, if acceptable.)

I'm suffering from the same issue as well.

Here is an example of what happens when it turns "green" https://i.imgur.com/VZ7VQf2.jpg

Sometimes it's fully green and sometimes it appears like that.

I'm also inclined to think its an issue with our graphics card, here's what I did to test it:

Opened photos in iMovie: green/purple screens

Opened same photos in FCP: green/purple screens

Went into guest account o my macbook to make sure it is not an imovie library problem or some of my account settings: many green/purple screens.

For some reason more greens and purples appear in the final output than when scrubbing over thumbnails in the project file. Some happen in the project file, but more appear in the export of the file.

Really need a confirmation for the source of this problem. Thanks.

I recently had this same issue.  The answer I was given from Apple engineering was that the issue is being worked on and I could use a workaround for the time being.  You have to edit any images to smaller than 3000X2250.  I chose to purchase FCPX instead of downsizing all my images.

Hi guys. I struggled with this problem and have an open ticket at Apple Support.

Meanwhile I was able to workaround it by converting my .JPG images into .PDF by simply opening them up on the Preview app and File->Export and then selecting the Format: PDF (did not try the "Export as PDF" directly).

Please note you can batch export the files (check out Batch Image Conversion in Mac OS X the Easy Way with ...)

Once I did that 99% of my original images (1 failed out of 117) were loaded up into iMovie 10.1 (on MAX OS El Capitan on a MacBook Pro (13-inch, Late 2011) with Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB) correctly and I was able to create my movie.

    Hope it helps!

For me the workaround is much easier. If a photo turns green I go left to the PROJECT MEDIA. I browse to the photo and right click it to get menu. On the menu I select REVEAL IN FINDER. In finder I click DUPLICATE. Then drug and drop the duplicate to the timeline (the movie). That's it.

Final Cut Pro people have the same problem with Macs. So, the problem is in the relative links and all that mess Apples created for the new photo library structure. Apples created a monster, the same as Google with Youtube and Panasonic with their mpxyz!? video format. To fix this, Apples have to re-invent the system, then re-write many apps. That is only my guess, but it explains why it is not getting fixed, instead iMovie is now a free soft.  Windows makers are going to rip them off. Although, in the version 10 Winds created similar style Photos app - no more intuitive and no more fun for advanced users. Anyway the worst is people blame it on hardware, then spend lots of money to buy a better one and end up with the same problem - green photos.
