Sep 23, 2014 12:22 AM in response to charlierose73by KimchiGyrl,I used a simple auxiliary cord from my headphone output on my computer into my PC Audio In the back of my TV... My MacBook I use to connect to my TV is a 2009 MacBook and my TV is a 2014 Insignia LED flatscreen.... after 2 years of searching for answers on this thread and people NOT understanding our struggles that the OPTION to select your TV DOES NOT show up in Preferences>sound LoL.... this is the only other solution. I now have sound from my TV and can sit in my bed and watch with remote in hand ;-) hope this helps.....

Jun 24, 2015 12:43 PM in response to ashhhbeeby adshim12,The solution is actually very simple. First verify that your screen is actually displaying on your TV. If you're seeing your desktop on your TV, then you're HDMI cable is functioning and you're on the right step. Next, open utilities and once again, make sure your TV appears on your displays. Next, go on the Utilities menu once again but this time, click on Audio. From there, select your TV and voila! Your TV should be playing your computer's audio

Jun 28, 2015 3:17 PM in response to KimchiGyrlby BahamaBreeze,I'm glad I just went straight to the last page of this thread and found this. I also have a 2009 macbook and I think it's ridiculous that the Mini DisplayPort doesn't fully function with our laptops. I was wondering about an aux cord and I'm glad it worked for you! I'll be heading out to get one.

Aug 13, 2015 12:39 PM in response to ashhhbeeby trowe24,After I contacting Apple Support I was able to see "HDMI as an option for TV" by
SMC reset instructions:
1. Shut down the computer.
2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter (The charger) to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
NOTE: Option is labeled as 'Alt' on some models
4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time. (The device should not power on at this point.)
5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.
- How do I know this was done correctly?
- You must hit the power button on its own after you release the buttons from step 4 to power on.
- Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

Apr 28, 2016 1:24 PM in response to ashhhbeeby smellslikemegan,Oddly enough, what worked for me was plugging something into the headphone jack. I tried taking it out and the sound went back to laptop speakers. Plugged it back in, sound comes from TV.
