Q: Closing tabs in Safari freezes Macbook

I've had a problem with Safari. I'm running El Capitan on a Macbook Pro 15" mid-2014. I noticed this problem on Yosemite as well, though. It hasn't happened a whole lot of times but TWICE today, so it's getting annoying. When I close a tab in Safari it freezes the browser and the entire Mac. Sometimes I can move the cursor but other times even that is frozen. Then I have to wait maybe 15-20-25 seconds before it unfreezes. I think it mostly happens on youtube actually. Is this something you're familiar with? Also, after it unfreezes my Mac runs slower, like laggy, so I have to restart.

Hope you can help.

Jonas

Hey Eric,  I'm having the exact same issue as OP. MBP freezing after closing Safari tabs while visiting Youtube that is temporary freeze but continuous occurrence, only to get relief after a reboot. Next visit to Youtube will eventually cause reoccurrences. I've also experienced this problem at other Google services i.e. maps, images and translate.

I hope we can find a resolve for this issue. Thanks Eric

Closing the tab may not be ending that connection.

If you don't use top sites -- edit them all out -- Safari automatically adds frequently visited sites to top sites -- and it refreshes them -- so if you go into a site via a bookmark and top sites refresh that causes a slow down -- when you remove a top site it goes into a list of sites to never set as a top site -- if you reset Safari - top sites - it reloads a set of defaults -- if you don't tidy up top sites - all clearing the cache does is cause all that stuff to reload.

So it just happened again! I'm not sure what parts of the console thing I need to copy but here is the minutes where it happened. I'm not sure it says anything unusual..

You mentioned something about the kernel log but my mac hasn't shut down because of it nor given me any warning about any kernel log problem or whatever.

Anyway, now my mac is super laggy but it stops when I restart. What is up with this problem??

I have the same problem since Yosemite too.

Really need some help from Apple because this is starting to become frustrating.

Same problem here on my mid-2013 MBA, though I'm noticing this only since upgrading to El Capitan. It's been happening to me on various sites, and has been happening frequently enough that I'm switching to Chrome for now. Hope Apple fixes this soon.

The problem persists, Apple. Will there be any fix or any kind of help?

Youtube is the problem, it seems. Only happens there.

Apple doesn’t routinely monitor the discussions. These are mostly user to user discussions.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Or you can use your Apple ID to register with this site and go the Apple BugReporter. Supposedly you will get an answer if you submit feedback.

    Thanks, Eric.

It looks like I need to be a registered Developer if I want to report a bug via Apple BugReporter.

I hope they solve this though. It's pretty dumb I can't use safari on a mac.

Anyway, I signed up as a Developer and reported the bug. We'll see what happens. I'll post here again if they answer.
