Q: Photos in El Capitan

I updated to El Capitan today on both my iMac and MBA. I've been running Photos on both, having spent weeks waiting as Photos on each machine uploaded the system Photos library for each machine to iCloud then slowly sorting out the photos and videos that didn't match on both machines and finding and eliminating duplicates. Finally, after a few months of working on this, I was able to get the numbers and albums close to matching on both machines.

Then out came El Capitan today with an updated Photos app. the installation went smoothly on the iMac which I did first. Opening Photos for the first time, it spent a few minutes Updating the Library", then everything was fine. just like before.

I then turned to the MBA. After El Capitan was installed, I opened Photos. It similarly started the "Updating Library", but after about a minute, a message popped up that said: "The library “Photos Library.photoslibrary” has inconsistencies that must be repaired." It offered a message button, "Repair". I clicked that and it started preparing, but almost immediately, a new message popped up: " The library could not be opened. The library “Photos Library.photoslibrary” could not be recognized." It offered me two buttons: "Open Other..." or "Quit".

i only have that one Photos  System library, “Photos Library.photoslibrary”, so I chose quit and immediately the whole program closed. No further error or quit message.

I'm aware of the manual Repair option, Command+Option+Open Photos, so I tried that. got the option to repair, and it started. It lasted for about 10 minutes, never getting beyond 5%, then it all crashed. Same error message and options as before: " The library could not be opened. The library “Photos Library.photoslibrary” could not be recognized." It offered me two buttons: "Open Other..." or "Quit". So I can't open the library nor will it repair.

FWIW, i had the Photos library on the iMac ticked for Full Copies on the iMac, but had the MBA using the space-saving option. I can't really transfer a copy of the library from the iMac to the MBA and then choose that as the new system Library on the MBA because it wouldn't fit on the remaining free space I have left.

Any ideas on what I should do next would be appreciated (looking to leonie or Old Toad)? Thanks!

I just loaded El Capitan onto a new to me macbook pro (mid 2013) and there is no photo app, no photos app, nothing but photo booth.  I've checked everywhere and NOTHING.  Do I need to reload EC?

As Application Developer and upcoming Software Engineer, I can just confirm that the Application is not well overthought. The import process as File recognition and Library argumentation, ist widely away from a competitive solution. I felt very disappointment to see the troubles Apple is having in theirs Software since to Years up to now.

Apple is starting to decrease the product quality and getting back to the "Jobs less era", the black period before Steve got back to his Enterprise.

Unfortunately for you, there's notion else to do as waiting for a BugFix as a new release, cause the code is a pretty bad one!

You can fixing the issue (Whiteout chance of an automation process) one a time, considering to repeat the whole process again, for each time. So better to send some feedback to Apple, and try to teach them the problem, pretty slowly.

As I am not an Application developer I can affirm that the iCloud Photo Library works perfectly for me, with all the Macs I use it on. I see no errors, no delays and can not agree (from the results I get) that "Apple is starting to decrease the product quality and getting back to the "Jobs less era"

The Photos app will be in the Applications folder.  It's part of the system now so will be there.

What about the 100's of different faces I have taged, do I have to go and redo that for 45,000+ photos?

I have no idea what you're referring to.  This is your first post in the topic and you don't tell us anything about your situation.  We're not mind readers nor can we see your Mac.

What makes you think you would have to redo the faces?

Using the photos app, if I follow the instructions listed in this thread, if I blow away my local copy of my 45000+ photos, and I resetup photo's syncing them from the cloud, what happens to the 100 different people faces I have tagged in my 45000+ photos? Will I have to retag all of them?

Yes, you'll have to retag them: Use Photos and iCloud Photo Library on multiple Mac computers - Apple Support

However, this article tells how to maintain some ID info for those files using keywords.  If you select all the photos containing one particular face you can batch add a keyword for that face with the keyword pane (Command+K).

Apologies. I would delete the question if I could figure out how; i apparently need to read a tutorial on participating; my question was not posted in the right place anyway. I have since gone to the apple store and got help there.

How long does it take to trash photo library?  I  have about 5000 photos and message says it is still moving pictures to trash after 3 hours.

Deleting the library takes longer than you might expect because the library is a bundle rather than a regular file.  The bundle includes all the photos and all the extra parts of the database, such as indices, thumbs of the photos, etc.  When you delete the library the Finder deletes all these files which are within the library bundle, which can take a while.

    How do chake2.

This (hopefully) linked discussion will help you to clear the failure of osx to upload properly, it's really long winded but worked 100% for me. Look for the post from October last year.

Caution, Private.Parts.  Smart Albums do not work reliably in all cases, so a method which depends on Smart Albums is inherently unreliable.
