Q: Lost storage space on my mac

Today, I tried to install Windows 10 through Boot Camp on my MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012), OS X El Capitan Version 10.11.1 with 250 GB SSD. I had around 80 GB free and I gave 40 GB for Windows and 40 GB for the mac. I got to the step within Bootcamp where it was partitioning my SSD, and I went away for a few minutes. When I came back my Macbook had restarted. I opened Disk Utility and saw that under APPLE SSD SM256E Media it says 251 GB but under Macintosh HD only 209.79 GB capacity with 47.91 GB free. It appeared to have partitioned but it hasn't and therefore I have lost some storage space.Screen Shot 2015-11-30 at 12.52.43 PM.png

If it hasn't partitioned, where are the missing GBs? Why is the capacity only 209.79 GB? Please, help me. Thank you!

Can you post the output of the following Terminal commands?

    diskutil list

    diskutil cs list

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

    sudo fdisk /dev/disk0

The "sudo" commands will prompt for your password, and it will not be echoed back. You may also see a warning about improper use of "sudo" and potential data loss due to "abuse" of the command.

You have 40GB stuck in Free Space.

    1. Resize the CS volume "Macintosh HD" to it's full size. Please enter the full UUID, I will just enter the first part of the string - diskutil cs resizeVolume 8FF06E55-... 0g

    2. Boot into Internet Recovery.

    3. Run Utilities -> Disk Utility and repair the outermost disk.

    4. Run diskutil cs list and verify that there is no significant disk space in the Free Space line.

Do I proceed with step 2?

Yes. The error messages confirms that Step 2 and 3 are required by requesting whole-disk repair.

Boot into Internet Recovery (not local Recovery) and run

    diskutil repairDisk disk0

and check diskutil cs list output.

Sorry, how do you boot into Internet Recovery? I restarted the mac and held cmd + r, then I connected to my WiFi and entered the password. Then I opened Terminal and ran diskutil repairDisk disk0, typed y and enter. Then I typed diskutil cs list. Still says 40 GB on free space. Am I doing something wrong?

Internet Recovery is started using Command+Opt+R. Command+R starts local recovery,

From disk utility error code 3 when creating windows image for bootcamp - you can see Screen+Shot+2015-11-26+at+22.32.15.png which has a line about Growing Logical volume.

Run the diskutil cs resizeVolume in Internet Recovery and then run the repairDisk. I assume your have only one hard disk in your Mac.

    and got this:

    Started CoreStorage operation

Error: -69744: The target Core Storage volume is locked

Since you are in Internet Recovery, run diskutil repairDisk and check the output of diskutil cs list. If that does not work, then you may want to consider the following steps...

    1. Backup OSX and all your files - Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support .

    2. Boot into Internet Recovery (Command+Opt+R) - OS X: About OS X Recovery - Apple Support .

    3. Click on Utilties -> Disk Utility and Erase your internal whole disk.

    4. Restore OSX and your files - Use Time Machine to back up or restore your Mac - Apple Support .

This requires a separate external disk which can accommodate TM backup - Backup disks you can use with Time Machine - Apple Support .

That worked! Thank you very much! I didn't have to erase the whole disk, whew.

If you are in Local Recovery, it is running from your internal disk0. diskutil will not correct the space issue. Internet Recovery allows the internal disk to be available for such operations. There are some El Capitan vagaries, but the general resizeVolume/repairDisk sequence works.

Please backup OSX before you start installing Windows again. I suggest 64-100GB for Windows.
