Q: I have an ipod touch, and when I went it on a couple of days ago I went onto messages and all but one groupchat had been deleted through no effort of my own. Does anyone know how to get them back??

I'm not really sure what to do to get the messages back? I don't really mind about the messages to individual people because there wasn't really anything important in those conversations, but I was in three group chats and all of those were pretty important. Does anyone know how to get chats/messages back?

Thanks

iPod touch, iOS 9

Only if you backed up the device after the messages were on the device and have not backed up the device since the were deleted. If that was the case you can restore from backup

If you go into Settings>Messages, there is a setting for Keep Messages. Check that setting.

That setting only control automatically deleting the messages. It does not effect if the message was deleted by the user.

I understand that, as according to the OP, they did nothing on the device and a conversation was deleted. At least that is what I understood from reading the title of the thread.

I went onto messages and all but one groupchat had been deleted through no effort of my own.

Is that what you understand from "no effort of my own".
