Q: I lost access to my NAS share drive since EL Capitan

Hello all,

 

Since the migration to EL Capitan on my MacBook Pro, I lost the direct access to my NAS Drive under Finder/Shared. My NAS is a Dlink DNS 320 and it is using a standard NETATALK plugin. I have another mac mini with the old Yosemite OS and it is still being able to see my NAS.

 

When trying to access my DNS320 under my EL Capitan system, because the link is still there under Finder/Shared!, I get two pop-up messages :

 

"There was a problem connecting to the server "dns325". The server may not exist of it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or ip adress, check your network connection, and then try again."

and

"There was a problem connecting to the server "dns325". Check the server name or IP address, and then try again. If you continue to have problems, contact your system administrator".

 

I was able to mount some folders by "connecting to server" function under Finder->Go, and using the URL "afp://dns325._afpovertcp._tcp.local". But it doesn't explain to me why the Finder doesn't see anymore, automatically, my NAS.

 

It seems to be a bug brought by EL Capitan.

    Some update: on Lacie BIG2NAS, software release NasOs 4.1.9.2

    - connexion using Lacie Network assistant works: my shares are appearing on the desktop with the path /Volumes/one_of_my_shares

    It seems it does an afp:// connexion, but it's quicker than menu-connect to server...

    - on the Volumes tab from Lacie Network  assistant, there is a checkbox "auto", which sould allow auto-mounting on reboot, but  as I don't need it, I didn't test it.

     

    Maybe someone can use this ;-)

    Following the instructions on the seagate help page helped me get my Synology drive to show up again as a shared drive.  Before that I was only able to see the Drive under to GO/Computer menu option. Now its appears fine again

    I'm using OS 10.11 (El Capitan) in a 12" Macbook. I'm having several issues with my Seagate's Personal Cloud (a Network Attached Storage) and Time Machine. My Personal Cloud isn't recognized in Finder, so I have to make a direct connection (connecting to server).


    After one our trying to connect to my NAS trough Time Machine, the backup of 16 GB, takes more than 20 hours. I assume this is not normal at all.


    Do you think of another alternative to make backups possible? Thank you in advance.


    Are you going to make a patch for El Capitan as soon as possible?


    Macbook (Retina 12-inch, Early 2015), OS X El Capitan (10.11.1).

    Hi,

     

    I had a long support chat / mail ping pong with LaCie - and they don't see the error.

     

    When Its possible should everybody contact LaCie to describe the problem - but be warned - the answers are not always can be taken seriously.

     

    Here is the latest answer from the support:

     

    The 5big NAS Pro uses the Apple Bonjour protocol, and has RAID options, see:

    In El Capitan this is changed, that is why the difference between Yosemite and EL Capitan.

     

    I don’t know the other 3 Lacie products therefore I cannot judge if and how they might be influenced by El Capitan.

     

    How are you using the NAS?

    SimplyRAID1 (no data protection) or 2 (with data protection)
    JBOD1
    RAID 02
    RAID 11 (no data protection) or 2 (with data protection)
    RAID 53
    RAID 64

     

    All these settings are under the RAIDstructure related and therefore changed the performance under El Capitan.

     

    On you MAC make sure that under Finder preferences connect to server is enabled

    In case you operate under JBOD you should see the 5 single drives.

    It still has to do with OS settings difference between Yosemite and El Capitan

     

    But this is a NAS !! with own OS !!!

    Super Duper, Carbon Copy Cloner,  and some others are available.

    Are you going to make a patch for El Capitan as soon as possible?

    Well, I certainly am not. I also doubt that Apple will do so as there isn't anything to patch.

    Apple is continually working on it's SMB/CIFS networking, so that may improve, but that has nothing to do with the software installed on a NAS. The manufacturer of your NAS would have to provide that "patch."

    It's not the NAS software. It's El Capitain. I confirmed this with Apple technical support. They know about the problem With El Capitain and NAS drives. They stated until an update fixes this, the work around is to connect manually.

    I have a Sinology NAS and like many others here, after the El Capitan update seemed to have no other whey then CMD-K getting into my NAS' shares. However, it seems that my mac just simply needed a WINS reset, perhaps yours is fixed with this also. Try this:

    1. Open system prefs

    2. Select Network

    3. Press Advanced (button in right corner)

    4. Select WINS tab

    5. Select a Workgroup.   My mac shows 'homegroup' as well as 'workgroup' selecting either one seemed fine

    6. Click OK

    7. Click Apply and dismiss dialog

     

    Now select your NAS icon in Finder and it should show you all the shares on that NAS.

     

    I, too, have a Synology NAS, and only had this exact same problem after upgrading to the October 28th version of Synology firmware to pick up some necessary CVE security updates. But after applying the above workaround procedure, everything works fine again now, it even continues to work after a reboot.  I would love to know how resetting WINS fixes things, this seems somewhat unrelated.  Thanks for the suggestion!!!

    I have also test these settings - reset the NAS - in Preference from Finder activate / deactivate ...

    Makes no difference for me.With el Capitan is my LaCie NAS useless.

    What busreset described and helped me was to reset the WINS setting in the El Capitan advanced network settings in the System Preferences app. Any changes I tried before on my Synology side did not help but making this change on the MacOS side fixed it.

    I got a solution from Lacie, which was a simple enough approach:

     

    This issue is caused by El Captain so please auto-mount the shares as shown within the links below.

    I have 2 absolutely identical NAS - Lenovo Iomega ix2. They are configured differently:

    1 - RAID0 and Media Server is disabled. El Capitan Finder connects to it without any problem

    2 - RAID1 and Media Server is enabled. All my apple devices can connect to it including Yosemite Mac Mini. But El Capitan iMac cannot. I read the entire tread and tried all offered solutions. Nothing helped. Then I went one step further and now I am connected. This may help you guys.

     

    Go to Preferences -> Network ->  Ethernet ->Advanced -> WINS

    I did not have anything listed in WINS servers field. Click "+",  then enter your problematic NAS IP address. OK. Apply.... Voila!!!! Look in your Finder - your NAS is connected.

    I had the same problem. After a while, finder doesnot connect my synology nas drive. so this is what i do without restarting my mac.

     

    Go to Terminal, type "killall Finder"

     

    and then you can access ur nas drive in FINDER (when you are in local network)

    Same problem here (with Seagate Personal Cloud). I'd be happy to link manually via 'Connect to Server', but I'm not sure of the IP address - when I use 'arp -a' in Terminal none of the entries match the Seagate MAC. How else can I find the IP of the NAS so I can try to connect manually?
