Q: Optimum OS for 27" iMac, Model Identifier: iMac10,1?

I have a 27" iMac as in the subject line and want to run Autodesk Alias. I've run software update and it's fine, apparently. I can't download Yosemite - it 'pauses' permanently. Alias 2016 and 2015 need at least OS 10.8.5 to 10.9. Autodesk doesn't seem to allow the free download for educational users for an earlier version than 2015. Any ideas welcome! I'm guessing the OS requirements won't be so daunting for versions earlier than 2013. Catch 22.

You state that Autodesk Alias 2016 and 2015 need at least OS X 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion) or 10.9 (Mavericks). Checking the system requirements, it looks like Mountain Lion will work on your iMac (27-inch Late 2009).

To install Mountain Lion, you need one of these Macs:

iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
